Ese didn’t know how she got to Kano – Source

Facts have emerged about what 14-year-old Ese Oruru went through in the hands of her abductor, Yunusa Dahiru, aka Yellow, who, in August 2015, abducted her from Bayelsa and took her to Kano, his home state.

Ese’s father and mother had said their underage daughter, having been converted to Islam, was being forced into marriage, without their consent.
Following a massive campaign by The PUNCH newspapers, Ese was released by her abductor after which she was reunited with her family.
A source, who was privy to the information Ese gave at a recent private meeting in Bayelsa, said that while the teenager still looked traumatised by her seven-month ordeal in Kano, she was gradually regaining her confidence.
Our correspondent gathered that Ese said Yunusa had ‘offended her’.
She also said she did not know how she left Bayelsa with Yunusa for Kano.
She said she only realised when they had arrived in Kano that she was in a strange place.
Ese, however, said that later she recognised Yunusa among the motley of crowd she met in Kano – as her mother’s customer back home in Bayelsa.
She said her conversion to Islam was done the same day they arrived in Kano.
The PUNCH gathered that Ese revealed how she was given some concoction to drink in Kano.
She said she went through some religious recitation regularly during her stay in Kano, adding that she started to regain full consciousness when she was about leaving Kano.
The source added that Ese said she was never sent to any Islamic or regular school while she was abducted in Kano.
The source said, “She said she did not know how she got to Kano. She said she was kept mostly in places she could not recognise. She said they moved her often from one place to another often.
“She said she saw Yunusa come there at times, but it seems, for now, she does not recollect how he had raped her, because she is still traumatised about the whole thing. She also said there were other girls like her there.”
Our correspondent gathered that Ese had learnt to speak Hausa during those seven months in Kano because that was the language she heard mostly being spoken.
