Fire at Mimiko’s office as Sheriff visits

•Gov. Mimiko
The visit of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, to Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko was disrupted yesterday as the multi-billion naira executive chamber of the governor’s office was gutted by fire.

The PDP Chairman, who arrived in the state at 1.15pm, was expected to address party leaders and journalists in the chamber.
Sheriff was in a meeting with Mimiko in his main office when the incident occurred.
The fire was said to have been caused by power surge from the ante-room of the governor’s office.
Journalists and PDP leaders, who were waiting for Sheriff at the executive chamber office, discovered the fire but they could not put it out.
The governor left with his guest to the Government House, which is about two kilometers to his office.
Workers rushed out of their offices. Firemen and the Commissioner for Works, Gboye Adegbenro, arrived on the scene 20 minutes after the incident.
Commissioner for Information Kayode Akinmade said it was a minor incident.
According to him, “there was a power surge at the ante room that links to the executive chamber of the governor’s office.
“Our fire fighters responded promptly and put out the fire. Work is now back to normal at the governor’s office.”
Akinmade said he addressed reporters to set the record straight.
“It is a general thing. Of recent, I think the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office in Calabar was on fire.
“Thank God that our fire fighters were able to prevent it from spreading.”
The commissioner said he could not ascertain the level of damage.
At the Government House, Sheriff said he was in the state to consult with the PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman ahead of the party’s convention in May.
“I am in Ondo State to visit our governor general. I was in Rivers State on Tuesday to campaign for our two senatorial candidates and 21 State Assembly candidates ahead of Saturday’s re-run.
“I have a plan to visit all states. I called the governor general yesterday morning that I was in Rivers and that I want to come and visit him.
“My visit to Ondo is to discuss with the governor on how we will have a successful convention by the end of May, and all the preparations for the convention are on.
“All the re-run elections held recently show that the party is united because we won. It is a sign that all the aggrieved party members have buried their differences.”
Mimiko said since Sheriff came on board, PDP has won every election.
The governor said PDP needs a lot of coerciveness to move forward, adding that Sheriff’s political experience would bring the party together.
