Ogun police arrest seven suspected robbers, cultists

The Ogun State Police Command says it has  arrested five suspected armed robbers, who specialise in snatching cars in Ota in the Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state.

The command added that the robbers were arrested on Saturday around 10am along the Owode-Idiroko Road.

The suspects’ names were given as Mathew Faleti (25), Shola Isah (35), Monday  Edun (22), Moses Kumolusa (20), and Adebisi Telfa (20).

The police said the robbers had confessed to being members of a syndicate that snatched cars in Ogun State, adding that they had powers to hypnotise their victims.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the suspected armed robbers were arrested at their hideout by policemen attached to the Onipanu division of the command following a tip-off from an informant.

He said, “The armed robbers were arrested at their hideout along Owode-Idiroko Road in the Ado Odo/ Ota Local Government Area following a tip-off from an informant.

“The suspects have confessed to belonging to a car snatching syndicate, saying they have been terrorising the Ota area and Ogun State at large.  They also confessed to having powers to hypnotise their victims.”

Adejobi said items recovered from them included one unregistered Bajaj motorcycle, a locally-made bullet-proof vest, charms and suspected stolen goods.

In another development, police operatives attached to the Ago Iwoye division have arrested two suspected cultists after the initiation of some young boys in a bush at  Imosan Ijebu.

“The suspected cultists were arrested when some of the newly initiated members reported to the Divisional Police Officer that the cultists forced them into the bush for initiation without their consent,” Adejobi said.

He added that two suspects – Obasanjo Segun (25) and Musari Saheed (25) – were said to be among the  ring leaders that masterminded the initiation.

Adejobi said the suspects had confessed to belonging to the Aiye Confraternity, also known as Black Axe.

He said the state Commissioner of Police,  Abdulmajid Ali, had directed that the suspects in the two cases be transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for proper investigation.

He said, “The CP also vowed to flush cultism and cultists out of Ogun State because he believes that cultism is the basis for any crime or social vice. He said if cultism is tackled, crime is 90 per cent tackled.”
