Saraki's trial: CCT chairman refuses to step down

The application asking CCT chairman, Danladi Umar to withdraw from the case has been dismissed – Umar said the application of the accused lacks merit – Saraki’s lawyer, Raphael Oluyede said he was short of words to say The CCT chairman, Danladi Umar who is also the presiding judge on Thursday, April 28, refused to withdraw himself from the trial of Bukola Saraki, the Senate president. He also dismissed the motion asking him to withdraw from the case. “The tribunal holds that the application of the accused lacks merit and is hereby dismissed,” he said. After Umar gave his ruling, Raphael Oluyede, the counsel who filed the application said he was short of words to say. After the ruling, the cross examination of the witness, Michael Wetkas commenced.
In a motion dated April 19, an application was filed for the judge to step down from the trial based on his case with the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The application filed by Adebayo Oluyede, one of the counsels to Saraki is supported by 21 paragraphs. While reading the application, Umar was spotted with a smirk on his face while narrating the application out loud to the court. The first time the application was presented in court by Oluyede, it caused the judge to lose his temper. This happened on Thursday, April 21, after Oluyede, announced the motion he filed against the judge. When Oloyede was about to commence the body of the motion, Rotimi Jacobs, the counsel to the federal government said the business of the day is to cross examination of the witness, Michael Wetkas, therefore the motion should not be presented.
This angered the judge causing him to lose his temper at the lawyer in which a viral video was released to that effect.
