Stomach-churning moment free climber loses his grip and falls down the face of 17-storey hotel

Stomach-churning moment free climber loses his grip and falls down the face of 17-storey hotel... then gets up and WALKS away

  • Climber known as Joseph was at Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver, Canada
  • Climbed some scaffolding and a cable outside fifth floor of the building
  • Got to top of cable near the roof, but ran out of strength and tried to rest
  • Finally let go and plunged to the hard concrete below, screaming as he fell

This is the stomach-churning moment a free-climber slips while attempting to scale a hotel, breaking his arm and shoulder and sustaining spinal injuries.
The free-climber, only known as Joseph, was exploring the Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver, Canada when things went badly wrong.
He had climbed some scaffolding outside the fifth floor of the building before he grabbed a cable and hoisted himself up, moving one hand above the other.

He was scaling the rubber cable nine metres above ground in an attempt to get to the hotel roof as his friend Kalen watched on.
But as he neared the top of the roof, Joseph tired rapidly and tried to rest on a ledge that jutted out.
He hooked his foot up on the ledge while gripping firmly to the cable and then tried to grab on to it with his hands.

But he was too exhausted to lift himself up so panicked and slid back down the rubber wire.
He tried to hold on with what little strength he had left before he finally let go and plunged to the hard concrete below, screaming as he fell.
After the fall Joseph asked his friend what happened and Kalen replied: 'I grabbed your leg, it probably slowed you down... that was a perfect landing though, right on your back.'

Joseph walked away from the building but he woke up later that day and was rushed to hospital with a broken right arm and left shoulder, and minor spinal injuries.
He wrote on his youtube account that he has no memory of the fall because he was so full of adrenaline.
He said : 'After exploring the Fairmont hotel in Vancouver for overnight, my final plan was to climb the rubber cable so I can reach to the top of the building... And I fell...
'After the fall, Kalen lifted me onto my feet and we were able to casually walk out of the hotel at around 7am.
'I didn't realize at that time of how broken my body was, so we took a cab back to my apartment.
'Kalen stopped a cab because I was too f***** up to do so, and I crawled in onto the back seat, unable to sit.
'When we got back home I took a nap for about 3 hours only to wake up to a pain tenfold of what it was initially so I went to the hospital.
Joseph was too exhausted to lift himself up so slid all the way down the cable, exhaling loudly on the way

'I had broken my right arm and my left shoulder, and I also sustained some minor spinal injuries.
'This was one of the turning points of my life that helped me to assess my reasons for what I do.'
He went on to deliver a powerful warning to other free-climbers, saying:
'Now you see why I discourage people from climbing structures in dangerous settings. It is very lucky that I am able to live freely without any permanent injuries from the accident.
'If you're going to do this, you should really assess your reasons.
'Risking your life for fame or adrenaline rush is just shallow. But there are no right or wrong reasons.
'It is for you to decide. If you want to sacrifice your freedom or life to create an art for the humanity, then so be it...
'Chasing novelty is never ending. Just like with video games, if you are trying for achievements and high scores, you may feel the jolt, but you will feel empty once its all over.
'If you just enjoy it for what it is, it becomes something special and your happiness is independent from it.'
