Police warn citizens about circulating photos and videos on social media...Must Read!!!

The police are advising citizens to stop sharing voice notes, photos and videos of alleged sex offenders, or sex abuse acts. In recent weeks, persons have been circulating voice notes, videos and photos of alleged incidents involving victims of sexual abuse.

Head of the police Communication Unit Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay says if persons get these photos, videos and voice notes, they should alert the police to the information, instead of sharing it on social media.

She says the police are concerned  about the social media circulation, because after checks, police have found some images are photo shopped, for example the face of a missing person is digitally put onto a random image of a body. Another concern is that often times, the images are not related to any incident in Jamaica.

Superintendent Lindsay says the circulation of the photos, videos and voice notes, while well intentioned, is only causing unnecessary public panic. She is reminding citizens that if they are sent videos or photos of persons being molested, they are required under the law to contact the relevant authorities, to include police and Child Development agency.

Superintendent Lindsay adds that if persons share the photos and videos, they are breaching the Cyber Crimes Act. She adds that, as it relates to the circulation of photos and videos of alleged sex offenders, this can jeopardize police investigations, as well as adversely affect the court case against the accused.

Meantime, attorney-at-law, Christain Tavares Finson, says the level of impact of social media circulation on sex offence case varies, and will have to be treated on a case by case basis. He adds that the circulation of images and videos on social media, can impact the admissibility of evidence before the court.
