A single mother and founder of Oyema Foundation non-governmental organisation (NGO) a, Hannah Myles Coufie has asserted that Nigerian men are more responsible than their Ghanaian counterparts.

The women activist said this in an exclusive interview
According to her, the prevalence of single motherhood in the country could partly be blamed on the general irresponsibility some men.
“It seems as if our Ghanaian men, emphasis on our Ghanaian men are taking women for granted, because you can’t get this in Nigeria. Nigerian men are more responsible. And even UK, America, as you see them rough, rough like that, you can’t fool a woman, you will be chased wherever you are.”
Hannah Myles Coufie further blamed churches and parents for what she described as an unfortunate situation that needs a special policy intervention.
There are some social intervention programmes that are already giving relief to some less privileged persons especially in the rural areas.
One of such policies that comes to mind immediately is the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP). However, the women activist said there must be a separate policy to specifically target single mothers.
“As for us you go and our mothers will tell you it’s been there since time immemorial. At times, we blame our mothers and churches too. These women are going through a lot and they come to tell the pastor and he tells you Bible hate divorce so stay in the marriage, so the women are suffering, some are dying,” she alleged.
She said the plight of single mothers is so disheartening that it about time the central government took a holistic look at the situation and take steps to urgently address it to bring some relief to such women.“We think government should come in and discipline the men for us, there should be a policy… so I think the government should do something about it.”

The issue of single motherhood as a matter of fact is such a pressing one that need an unmitigated attention of the central government and all stakeholders.

The call by Mrs. Myles Coufie who herself is a single mother underscores the need to expedite action on the amendment of the spousal property right bill currently in parliament.
This might bring some level of respite to single mothers most of whom are burdened with children to cater for.
