Why Northern Governors Attended Quit Notice Meeting – Shettima

Northern Govs warn S'eastSeveral Northern Governors attended Thursday’s meeting of a coalition of northern groups as they announced the withdrawal of a quit notice against Igbo living in the North to make sure the group withdrew the notice as agreed, Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima has explained.
Shettima revealed at a press conference at Abuja’s Transcorp Hilton hotel that he had series of negotiations with the group to arrive at a peaceful resolution of the issue,The Punch reports.
Shettima was apparently reacting to the allegation by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) that the Arewa youth groups had the backing of the Northern political class by the attendance of Northern governors at the meeting.
In June, a coalition of Northern Youths had given Igbo three months to vacate the north. The group said the notice was in reaction to IPOB’s call for the creation of Biafra, a breakaway nation in the South East.
The notice was originally condemned by some northern politicians such as the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El Rufai. The Department of State Security and the Police promised to arrest those who issued the notice but despite making public appearances and holding press conferences none of the members of the group has been arrested.
In reaction to the notice, militant groups in the South South retaliated by issuing its own quit notice to all people from the north to vacate the region by October 1st.
