A 45-year-old woman, Diana Lovejoy, who was convicted in a
"murder-for-hire" plot against her ex-husband fainted in court just
moments after her guilty verdict was read out. According to Daily Mail UK, Diana was found guilty on Monday of
conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder over a September 2016
attack on her estranged husband Greg Mulvihill in Carlsbad, California.
Fox 5 footage taken from inside the courtroom showed Lovejoy looking
wide-eyed at her legal team as the verdict was read out before she
collapsed in her chair just seconds later.
A member of her legal team immediately reached out and grabbed her elbow
as an officer tried to help Lovejoy sit upright. The officer helped her
lie down on the floor as a fellow officer radioed for medical
assistance.
Judge Sim von Kalinowski cleared the courtroom while Lovejoy received medical attention.
Paramedics wheeled Lovejoy out of the court house and took her to hospital for treatment.
The ordeal briefly delayed the verdict reading for Lovejoy's
co-defendant - 50-year-old gun instructor Weldon McDavid Jr. He was also
found guilty of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Lovejoy and Mulvihill had separated in July 2014 and were in the middle
of a messy custody battle over their young son at the time of the
attempted murder.
During the heated divorce and custody battle, Lovejoy had accused her
ex-husband of molesting their son and sexually abusing her, according to
prosecutors.
The legal fight was coming to an end after shared custody had been
agreed upon. Lovejoy had also agreed to pay Mulvihill $120,000, which
would have been due in the weeks after he was shot.
Mulvihill was injured on the night of September 1 when he received a
phone call from someone claiming to be a private investigator with
information on Lovejoy.
The victim was instructed to drive to a deserted road where he would find a package regarding his ex-wife.
Mulvihill, who took a colleague with him, was shot by McDavid under his left armpit.
McDavid, a former Marine, later testified that he was a trained marksman
and that if he had actually intended to kill the victim he would have
done so.
The gunman met Lovejoy when she started taking shooting lessons at the range where he worked.
Lovejoy faces 25 years to life and McDavid faces 50 years to life in prison.
They will be sentenced on December 12.
