A 30-year-old woman has died after being stabbed in an Aldi supermarket before shoppers pinned down the knifeman who has now been arrested on suspicion of murder.
After the attack, Christmas shoppers were seen fleeing the North Yorkshire store in England amid screams and shouts of "get out". One witness claimed brave employees pinned down the 44-year-old suspect to the ground before he was arrested by police.
Emergency crews were called to the supermarket in Keighley Road, Skipton, shortly before 3.30pm today, according to North Yorkshire Police. The force confirmed the suspect "was initially detained by brave members of staff and public, before he was arrested by officers who were quickly on scene".
It added: "He was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder, but it has now turned into a murder investigation despite the efforts of medics to save the victim. The woman’s family are being supported by police officers while enquiries continue."
Taking to Facebook today, a shaken customer described how she had to dart out of the Aldi supermarket following the alleged stabbing.
"World has gone mental just had to dart out of Aldi in Skipton some one has been stabbed right next to me on one of the isles (sic)," she claimed.
She added: "Am litrelly shaking (sic)."
Another woman said she left her full trolley of shopping behind as she fled from the supermarket after hearing shouts of "Get out now."
"We nearly finished our shopping, left full trolley as heard shouting, get out now, people running out of store..." she wrote on the site.
North Yorkshire Police said the incident was not terror-related or believed to be a hate crime, and a murder investigation has now been launched.
"We are not in a position to identify the victim at this stage, and we urge people respect her family’s privacy and to avoid speculation and rumour on social media," the force said.
It added: "A police scene guard will remain in place overnight at Aldi. "
