Shocking! Australia Makes It Tougher To Become Its Citizen

Announcing sweeping changes to Australia’s citizenship laws, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Thursday unveiled tighter requirements for new applicants, a move that follows the scrapping of the 457 visa programme for foreign workers.

Under the new reforms, the applicants must be permanent residents for at least four years -- three years longer than at present -- and must be committed to embrace “Australian values”.

Prospective citizens will have to pass an English test that will focus heavily on respect for women and children, with possible questions about child marriage, female genital mutilation and domestic violence.

The test will have questions assessing an applicant’s understanding of and commitment to shared Australian values and responsibilities, Turnbull said.

The number of times an applicant can fail the citizenship test has been restricted to three. At present the test has no such restriction. Apart from this, an automatic fail for applicants who cheat during the citizenship test has been introduced.

Unveiling the changes, Turnbull stressed that Australian citizenship was a “privilege” that should be “cherished”.

How Young Man Killed Girlfriend And Hid Body In Freezer

A young Kenyan man, Abdulkarim Njoroge, has been arrested in connection with the death of his lover, Irene Kananu.

Njoroge, a 25-year-old university student was accused of killing Kanau and hiding her corpse in a freezer in his house.

Njoroge strangled Kananu in his house in Mtwapa region in Mombasa, following an argument when she wanted to dump him for getting another lady pregnant, Star reported.

The police arrested the suspected murderer on Tuesday, two weeks after the family of the deceased, an HR officer with chemical giant Henkel in Industrial Area, declared her missing on March 31.

The victim’s body was found naked, her head inside the refrigerator while her legs and hips were sticking out.

The couple reportedly fought after Kananu learned that Njoroge had impregnated his secret lover who is his neighbour living in the same block of flats with him.

They frequently argued over claims of infidelity on his part and Kananu had threatened to leave him several times.

The victim’s sister, Catherine Nduta, had reported her missing on April 3 at Githurai Kimbo police station, after trying to get her on phone several times to no avail.

Police opened investigations and two days later, investigators broke into Kananu’s house where they found Kananu dead.

Apart from murdering the lady, Njoroge was also said to have stolen her car and allegedly withdrew Sh40,000 from Kananu’s M-Pesa account.

Nigerian man awaiting trial found dead in his cell in Edo state

A 38-year-old awaiting trial prisoner Sunday Akubor died in Oko Prison, Edo State Tuesday evening, April 18th. According to Chief Executive Officer of Behind Bars Initiative, Prince Gwannishu Harrison (pictured) who broke the news this morning, the father of two was arrested for issuing a dud cheque to a business associate, one Abogame Fredrick.

He was arraigned before a Magistrate Court on two counts charge of conspiracy to defraud. Below is a statement by Prince Harrison:
"JLAA is outraged with the continuing neglect and mistreatment of inmates at the Oko Prisons Benin City , Edo state. The jail’s credibility and the public’s trust in the prisons administration are steadily declining with every violation of human and civil rights.
Sunday Akubor was arrested for issuing a dud cheque to a business associate, Abogame Fredrick, who had vowed to use his "connection" with the Edo State police command to ensure that Mr.Akubor, does not "return back from prison".

Despite his protest to the police that he had reasonable expectations of funds at the time of issuing the cheque and indeed went ahead to present the cash value of the cheque at the State CID Benin City, Edo state, the investigative police officer insisted that the case must proceed to a court of law at the behest of Mr. Abogame. That was two days to Easter.

JLAA got involved immediately after Mr. Akubor had spent three days in police cell without bail. JLAA Edo state Head of legal, Bright Omorodion Esq. was immediately dispatched to secure his bail and if necessary proceed to court to defend and assert Mr. Akubor's rights.
However, he was taken to Magistrate court and arraigned on two count charge of conspiracy to defraud and issuance of dud cheque. He was represented, on probono basis by a team of lawyers from JLAA. Bail was granted on what we have elsewhere described as harsh, punitive and wrongful.
Mr.Sunday Akubor until his death, was a trader, 38 and married with two children, Joan and Jason. I personally spoke with him on Easter Friday from his cell when he surprisingly called me and assured him that JLAA will do everything legally possible to get him out.
Yesterday morning, JLAA had filed application for variation of bail condition. By evening, words reached us that he was found dead in his cell. His death brings to the fore, once again the plight of poor detainees languishing in the various prisons in Nigeria as a result of obnoxious and punitive bail conditions imposed on them by courts.
Unfortunately, we do not see this situation improving drastically in the near future which is again the reason why we strongly recommended the immediate suspension of the new prison superintendent until the relevant authorities conclude investigative findings on the basis of our petition to the minister of interior.
We shall submit a petition to the Honourable Minister of the Interior this morning in Abuja. JLAA Director of litigation, Opeyemi Baderu will leave for Benin this morning to assess the situation first hand preparatory to instituting a court action against police and the Prison Authority for negligently causing the death of citizen Sunday Akubor.
We urge the Ministry of Interior to continue its investigation into potential violations of inmates’ constitutional rights of inmates in the various prisons in the land with utmost urgency. We will not be silent on this matter. We will leverage our community and legislative partnerships to make substantial changes in Nigerian prisons.
Regardless, the Nigerian Prison Authorities and the Police Authority just "bought" another litigation.

Update! Two Nigerians arrested at Cambodia Airport with drugs in their stomachs appear in court

Two Nigerian men arrested for smuggling 1.27 kilograms of cocaine in one of the men's stomachs have had their hearing postponed to seek evidence on whether they knew each other or had accidentally met at the airport. Phnom Penh Municipal Court presiding judge Heng Kesro on Tuesday, April 18th, ordered the postponement until April 28 to clarify what the relationship between the men was.
Okafor Ifeanyi Anthony, 42, and Adibe Paschal, also known as Oscar, 33, flew into Cambodia from Nigeria in May last year on a Qatar Airways flight after a transit in Dubai.

They were arrested at Phnom Penh International Airport with over a kilogram of cocaine discovered in Anthony’s stomach, according to their confession at the hearing.

Anthony said that he was asked to swallow the drug capsules by a man in Nigeria named “Nandy”, who allegedly told him to bring the drugs to a man called “Okata” living in Cambodia.
“[Nandy] said Okata will give me food to eat in order to get the drugs out, and he will give me $8,000 as a transportation fee,” he said.
Paschal denied any knowledge of the drugs, claiming that he met Anthony for the first time at the Phnom Penh airport and that he came to Cambodia to buy clothes to sell in Nigeria.
“When I was at the immigration section [of the airport], I met Anthony and asked him for help to fill out the form. After passing the scan machine, they arrested us,” Oscar said.
Both suspects said they had not known each other before and that they only started chatting at the airport.

See photo of Nigerian man and his Indian wife arrested for duping man on Facebook

Police on Good Friday, April 14, arrested a Nigerian national identified as Nagbu Orajuka and his Indian wife outside a church in Bhandup, Mumba, India for allegedly cheating a resident into paying them close to Rs. 14 lakh using a honey trap.

The complainant, Sandeep Singh, an IT professional received a friend request on Facebook from the female accused, who had set up an account in the name of Mercy John, in October last year. The profile had a picture of a Causasian woman, and she identified herself as a London-based businesswoman while chatting with Mr. Singh.

Mr. Singh exchanged numbers with her and they started chatting on WhatsApp. The woman then told him that her husband named Valentine was running a herbal seeds import business and had recently lost his supplier, and that Mr. Singh could make a fast buck by supplying the seeds to her husband.
Confirming the arrest, Deputy police commissioner (zone 7) Sachin Patil said:
"We have arrested a Nigerian national and his Indian wife who had made a Facebook account in the name of Mercy John and duped an IT professional from Bhandup."
"He lost at least Rs 11 lakh that he transferred to them under various pretexts. We suspect their involvement in more cases and have got their custody."
"The incident took place in November 2016, when the Bhandup resident received a friend request from one Mercy John, who claimed to be a UK national, " he added.
He accepted the friend request and soon started chatting with her on WhatsApp.
"She told him she worked for a UK-based pharmaceutical company which used to get herbal seeds from the US, but was no longer sourcing it from there. She told him that India had a supply of these herbal seeds used in medicines, and if he took up the supply, he would make a profit,” said Avinash Kanade, inspector, Bhandup police station.
The victim took the bait and went to the ‘Indian supplier’, buying seeds worth Rs 2.5 lakh. He gave these to a representative of the ‘pharmaceutical company’, who met him at BKC, the police said. The representative, a Nigerian national, told him the quality of seeds was excellent and placed an order for more seeds, for double the amount. The IT professional then paid another Rs 6.5 lakh and purchased more seeds, officers said.

Thus under various pretexts, the accused got over Rs 11 lakh from him. He got suspicious after John stopped answering calls.

The victim then approached the Bhandup police, which found out that some of these calls were made from Delhi. A police team led by police sub-inspector Jalinder Lembhe went to Delhi and found the address of the Nigerian national who had met the victim at BKC.

Eventually a constable pretended to be a courier employee reached Orajuka, who had been identified as the accused by then, officers said. His arrest led the police to his wife Niharika Deep, who had been running the fake Facebook account, said the police. Deep has also been arrest. Their laptops have been seized and are being analysed.

The Bhandup police had obtained CCTV footage of the area where Mr. Singh had met Valentine and retraced his movements to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, where they established that he had come to Mumbai from Delhi," said Mr Patil.
"With the help of some local informants in Delhi, we traced the two accused posing as Valentine and Mercy John. They were picked up outside a church on Good Friday, after which we brought them to Mumbai and arrested them. We are trying to apprehend the person who posed as the supplier,"
