A nine-year-old boy in the United States has killed his elder sister by shooting her in the head after she refused to hand over a video game controller.
The 13-year-old Mississippi girl identified as Dijonae White died from her injuries in Le Bonheur’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Officers say the boy wanted a video game controller in his elder sister’s possession and grabbed a .25 calibre handgun at about 1pm on Saturday when she refused to hand it over.
He allegedly shot her from behind and the bullet entered her brain.
A local sheriff said it was unclear how the boy obtained the gun. It is also unclear what consequences the young boy will face.
The children’s mother was in another room feeding other children lunch at the time of the incident, authorities said.
“He’s just nine,” said Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.“I assume he’s seen this on video games or TV. I don’t know if he knew exactly what this would do. I do know it’s a tragedy.”
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting, including how the boy got hold of the weapon.
Sheriff Cantrell told local press:
“This is all new ground for us, we’ve never dealt with a kid shooting a kid at age nine”
Reports say every day, seven children are shot and killed in the US while a further 40 are shot but survive.
