FSARS Smashes 5 Niger Republic Robbery Suspects

Operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, FSARS at Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island, Lagos, have arrested a five man-gang robbery suspect from Niger Republic for allegedly breaking and entering into a shop belonging to Udealor Bassey to steal handsets and laptop computers valued at N6.7m.
The arrested suspects are Abdulkadir Mohammed, 22; Haman Ali, 21; Bashiru Ali, 31; Zilfil Iliasu, 27 and Ayuba Hassan, 25.
Trouble started when the suspects invaded the shop belonging to Bassey located at Bariga area of Lagos, at midnight armed with iron rods, chisel and cutlasses on 8 February, 2018 to steal 325 different phones, 25 different laptop computers and 12 different phones on repairs, all valued at N6.7m and sold them to one Musa now at large for just N200,000.
A Police source said that, following the incident, the complainant, reported the robbery to the Deputy Commissioner of Police DCP, in charge of Federal SARS, Mr Ibrahim Kaoje who directed a team led by CSP Danladi Daura to fish out the suspects and recover the stolen goods.
Following the directive, Daura and his team swung into action and after days of intelligence gathering, the operatives arrested Mohammed at Pelewura area of Lagos Island and he led the Police to arrest two at Oluwole Market, Lagos Island and others at Ijora area of Lagos.
Items recovered from the suspects, according to the Police, included four phones belonging to different victims.
During investigation, according to the Police all the arrested suspects allegedly confessed to the crime that they sold the stolen items to one Musa for N200,000 and that they normally carry loads for traders on Lagos Island during the day to cover up and go out to rob in the night, adding that they did not use guns, but cutlasses, chisels and iron rods.
In his alleged confessional statement to the Police, Mohammed, the alleged ring leader stated: “We came to Nigeria through the northern borders to Lagos to rob and we have been covering up our robbery activities for the past three years by carrying loads for traders during the day on Lagos Island and go out to rob at night. We promise to repent if we are set free from this case” Mohammed allegedly told the Police.”
All the suspects were arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate Court on a three-count charge of armed robbery.
Police prosecutor, DSP Charles Odii said that the offences the accused persons committed were punishable under sections 411, 309(3) and 287(7) of the Criminal Law of the Lagos state 2015.
The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges in the open court and Magistrate A.A Famoyibo granted them bail in the sum of N400,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
Famoyibo adjourned the case till 26 March, 2018 for mention and ordered that all the accused be kept at Ikoyi Prison till they fulfilled the bail conditions.
