NYC correction officer shoots and kills black woman, claims it accidentally happened while he was cleaning his gun

A Rikers Island correction officer has been arrested for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend on Wednesday, March 21.

42-year-old Alain Samba killed 35-year-old Marie Faye overnight on Wednesday in Faye's Bronx apartmen
t in New York. The single gunshot woke up people who live in the building on Ogden Avenue. As Marie Faye was sprawled out on the floor of the Ogden Ave. apartment in Highbridge just before 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, Samba called 911 to report the incident.

"I accidentally shot my friend," Alain Samba told the operator.
Police arrived to find Faye wounded, and 42-year-old Samba with a gun. Samba claims he was cleaning his gun when the weapon fired on accident. He was off-duty at the time of the incident.

Faye suffered a gunshot wound to her chest and was rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where she died.
Speaking of the victim, Jose Perez, Fayes's apartment building superintendent said: "She smiled all the time. I could not say one negative thing about her. She was a fantastic person. Her career as a nurse was taking off. I can't believe this happened."

Detectives charged Samba with criminally negligent homicide. He was held on $35,000 after a brief arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court on Thursday night. Sources said Samba, a father of two, has been a correction officer for just over a year and was assigned to Rikers Island before his arrest.
