              Beggars

Many residents of Oshodi area of Lagos State were at the weekend full of praises for the Lagos State Government when officials of the State Ministry of Youth and Social Development swooped on the area and arrested
about 43 beggars at different locations within Oshodi and its environs.
Expressing his joy at the development, a resident of Mafoluku area in Oshodi, Sikiru Babatunde said activities of beggars in Oshodi had become worrisome in recent time with some of them often seen harassing people and insulting those who did not give them any alms.
He added that apart from the harassment and embarrassment often caused, the beggars contributed greatly to the abuse of the environment.
They litter the environment with all manners of thrash and dirts. Apart from this, some of them also defecates and urinates indiscriminatory on roads, medians and other public places.”
Another resident who pleaded anonymity said she was in deed grateful to the Ambode’s administration for responding swiftly to the yearnings of the community as they were afraid that the activities of destitute in Oshodi could also pose great security risk to residents of the area.
When contacted, the State’s Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Agboola Dabiri confirmed the raid, adding that rescuing destitute and beggars was within the mandate of the Ministry.
He said that the officials of the Ministry, especially its enforcement arm would continue the exercise and extend it to other parts of the State until every nooks and crannies of Lagos was liberated from the menace posed by beggars, miscreants and destitute.
It would be recalled that the Ministry earlier in the week, rescued 51 persons consisting of children, mentally challenged and destitute who have since be placed in appropriate homes for attention.
