Tricycle Owners Protest In Ibadan Against NURTW

Members of the Oyo State Tricycle Owners Association, Ojoo Branch on Wednesday staged a peaceful demonstration against what they termed, ‘intimidation’ from their sister’s union, National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW and the management of Akinyele South LCDA.
The protesters accused Akinyele Council of collaborating with the NURTW to drive them away from their official park so that it could be allocated to NURTW.

The protestants carried placards with various inscription such as: “Save us from the oppression of NURTW”, “Protect our source of livelihood for us”, “this suffering is too much. Why will government be supporting NURTW to harass members of the public?”, NURTW is a terrorist group terrorising people at will”.
The Protesters’ spokesperson, Comrade Yusuf Muritala, who spoke with journalists stated, “We are using this protest to express our grievances against the oppression of the government and NURTW and at the same time fight for our right.
“Our organisation is duly registered and the space which we are using as park was allotted to us by the local government last year only for us to get to this our park yesterday and received instruction that we should vacate the place. The Divisional Police officer in Ojoo came to our park and said we should leave immediately and ever since we have abandoned our tricycle”.
Muritala stated further, “We were at the Area Command office and they told us that the land has been given to NURTW. This is oppression. NURTW have their park and we have our own. Why will government displace us for others? Is this fair?”
Commenting on the development, the Council Chairman, Yakuub Alli said that the decision for the tricycle owners to vacate the park was taken in the interest of peace, adding, “we realise that the unions occasionally have crisis among each other and in order to forestall breakdown of law and order, we decided that the tricycle owners should leave while the NURTW continue with their business. There are about 10 parks in that place, and we have told them to go and look for another place and we will approve it for them”.
