Court declares impeachment of Imo deputy governor, Prince Madumere illegal lailasnewsThe impeachment of Imo Deputy Governor, Prince Madumere, has been declared illegal by an Owerri High Court in a judgment which lasted for three hours.Justice Benjamin Iheaka of Owerri High Court who flayed the Chief Judge of the state, Paschal Nnadi and the Attorney General of the state, Militus Nlemadim for not adhering to the provisions of section 188(5) of the 1999 constitution as amended in the impeachment of Madumere on July 31, 2018, declared the impeachment of Imo Deputy Governor, Prince Madumere as invalid and of no legal effect.

It was also gathered that the Jurist contended that the Chief Justice constituted the seven-man panel, to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct by Madumere by the state House of Assembly outside the seven days lifeline as provided by the constitution.

Prince Eze Madumere was impeached by 19 of the 37 members of the Imo House of Assembly, after the assembly received a report by a panel set up by the state chief judge which allegedly indicted Mr Madumere of gross misconduct.

However sources claimed that the Imo Deputy Governor, had a face-off with Governor Rochas Okorocha over the latter’s successor in 2019. While Mr Madumere seeks to succeed Mr Okorocha, the governor reportedly supported his son-in-law.

The crisis worsened during the APC local and state congresses in the state with Mr Okorocha and his deputy supporting separate factions. Although the APC faction supported by Mr Madumere and a senator, Osita Izunaso, was initially recognised by the national leadership of the party, its election was upturned by a court.
