*Programmes set to impact millions starting this month
*Pipeline Vandalism immediate cause of recession - VP

Implementation plans for the effective commencement of a number of social investment programmes of the Buhari presidency has reached advanced stages as selection of the first 200,000 unemployed graduates to get jobs is now being completed.

Speaking with a small group of Radio journalists and producers at the Presidential Villa, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN disclosed that “we expect that before the end of the month, we will engage 200,000,” out of the 500,000 unemployed graduates the Buhari administration plans to hire in the N-Power jobs programme.

According to him, the direct government jobs is meant “to keep this young people occupied, pay them some amount of money and also give them a device, which will also help them to learn several skills that they can develop as time goes on.”

Prof. Osinbajo added that “we expect that before the end of this month, we should have engaged 200,000 of them and we are hoping that before the end of the year we should have engaged more.”

Similarly, Prof. Osinbajo disclosed that the Home-Grown School Feeding programme is set to kick off in several states this month.

“Definitely before the end of this month, we expect that several states would have come on stream with their Home-grown School Feeding Programmes,” the Vice President noted.

He added that the Home-Grown School Feeding programme “will energise agriculture in the different states because it is what you plant that you feed the children with, we will be hiring caterers, cooks, etc in each state because it will be Federal Government funded from Primaries 1-3 and the state governments hopefully would be able to cater for the other classes.”

According to the Vice President, the Home-Grown School Feeding programme is another section of the Social Investment programmes that impact directly on the lives of Nigerian children and families. He said several states will start implementing the Home-grown School Feeding Programme before the end of October.

Equally he stated that the Micro-Credit scheme for which the Buhari administration will give very low-cost loans to more than one million Nigerian artisans, traders, market women and other ranging from N60,000 to N100,000 would also be kicking off this month.

According to him, “for women across the country, we are giving loans, micro credit loans to about 1.5 million women. We are focusing on market women and artisans, loans between N60,000 and 100,000 each. We are working through the Bank of Industry, BOI. They are going to be giving out these loans, we‘ve already identified the banks and everybody who is involved in this. We should be flagging-off hopefully before the end of this month.”

Such soft loans to the artisans, traders and market women, according to him, is meant “to boost their businesses.”

The Vice President reassured Nigerians that the current Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari is well focused on ameliorating the plight of the citizens of the country, observing that the administration feels the pains of the citizens and is committed to assuaging them.

Said he: “We fully understand and appreciate the situation of things in the country and we are committed to ensuring that that pain is assuaged. The President stated that clearly in his October 1st broadcast to the nation. All his life, he has been a salary earner, he has never been a businessman, so he understands why someone who earns a salary and even those who do not, are severely challenged at this time of economic recession such as we are experiencing.”

On the economy, Vice President Osinbajo said government is committed to developing it, to enable citizens find opportunities within the country.

“I want to assure Nigerians that the government of President Buhari is a very focused and determined government. We are committed to ensuring that we are able to develop the Nigerian economy in such a way that Nigerians are able to find opportunities in their own country, “he said.

He listed the ‘Made in Nigeria’ project, moving away from import dependence, boosting agriculture, and encouraging manufacturing as some of the urgent actions being pursued by government in order to move the country forward.

The Vice President also emphasized the Buhari administration’s zero tolerance for corruption, as corruption is “the major drain on the country’s resources” adding that “no one would be spared in the fight against corruption because, even the close friends of the President know that they will not be spared, he will not cover for them. Fighting corruption is a priority,” he stressed.

On the current recession, the Vice President said the fall in oil prices and pipeline vandalism were the immediate causes of the recession, thus reducing drastically, the country’s revenue. But he assured that government will adequately manage the little being realised now.

“We were producing up to 2.2 million barrels a day but all of a sudden, the vandalization of our terminals caused us to loose up to a million barrels a day.

“So when you loose up to 60% of your revenue or even more, there must be a shock because you are really earning very little and we will ensure that that very little that we are earning is as well managed as possible,” he said.

Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academics, Cross River University of Technology, Prof Gabriel Ikpi, is currently recuperating from gunshot wounds sustained after he escaped being kidnapped.

The incident, which happened over the weekend, had thrown the university community into panic.

Also, an unidentified daughter of a former Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, Mr. John Umoh, was kidnapped in Calabar on Monday.

This came just as the Executive Secretary of Obudu Urban Development Authority, Mr. Canice Atsu, was on the same day abducted by unknown gunmen in his Obudu home.

According to Southern City News, while the deputy vice chancellor was said to be recuperating from gunshot wounds, the abductors of Umoh’s daughter had demanded N20m, even as the police officer offered to pay N115,000 to the kidnappers.

A source, who spoke on Ikpi’s kidnap attempt, said the deputy vice chancellor escaped from the car after the gunmen had cornered him.

The source said, “The suspects attempted to kidnap the deputy vice chancellor for ransom, but luck was on the side of the Professor of Agriculture as he successfully fought his abductors.

“He escaped in the end with a gunshot on his leg. He is believed to be traumatised, but recuperating in the hospital.”

On the kidnap of Umoh’s daughter, a source said the policeman, who is currently the DPO in charge of Mbo Division in Akwa Ibom State, had offered to pay N115,000 but the kidnappers rejected.

It was learnt that DPO Umoh’s wife also sustained bullet wounds in the encounter with the abductors in Calabar.

A source said, “The gunmen had a gun duel with the DPO before they succeeded in taking the daughter. I understand that the wife was shot when she struggled to save her daughter. She is said to be in the hospital.

“The kidnappers have demanded N20m but the DPO could not raise the money. He was only able to raise N115,000 and it is not clear if the abductors have collected that money."

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, said, “For the case of the Obudu kidnap, no official report was made to the police, but the commissioner has asked the DPO to monitor and investigate the situation. For that of Umoh’s daughter, we are on top of the situation.”

Omg! 3 Live 30 Foot Pythons found in Maryland Estate..photo

Some security guards of Greenland Estate in the Mende, Maryland area of Lagos State killed three 30-foot pythons in the early hours of Tuesday.

Punch Metro learnt that the killing of the reptiles brought panic into the estate as residents expressed fear for their safety.

It was gathered that the animals were exposed after the dredging activities of the Lagos State Government.

It was gathered that after killing the pythons, the security guards on the estate put them up for sale for N10,000.

The Vice Chairman of the estate, Sola Adekoya, said more than 15 pythons had been killed on the estate in 2016 alone, urging the government to find a lasting solution to the overgrown canals in the area.

He said, “The security men and some squatters caught the three pythons this morning around 8am. The giant snakes were about 30-foot long.

“We have seen more than 15 pythons this year alone; the guards kill them regularly. The reason is that the canals are overgrown and the snakes always hide under the canals. We need government’s  intervention on time to avoid any tragedy.”

It was learnt that residents of the area always stayed indoors at night for fear of being attacked by snakes.

A visitor to the area, Adewale Adeoye, told Punch Metro that he saw the three snakes when they were alive.

Adeoye urged the Lagos State Government to create a zoological garden for the animals to preserve them and generate income for the state.

He said, “These snakes are worth a fortune abroad. The Lagos State Government should conduct a wildlife survey in order to preserve threatened animals and plants.

“How can you be talking of a mega city without a green zone or a biological garden? The young men have gone to sell the snakes for N10,000; a generation of rare animal species gone down the throat in less than 24 hours. This merely reflects poverty of ideas in governance.”

Wow! Afro beat musician Femi Kuti reveals something he's not happy about...

Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has blasted president Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership elite in the country for the continuous backwardness it has subjected Nigerians.

The first son of the late Afrobeats legend Fela Kuti said this at the 8th edition of the symposium, The Fela Debates, as part of celebration of Felabration, the annual festival founded by his sister, Yeni Kuti, to honour their father, who died in August 1997. It started on Monday October 10 and will end on Sunday, October 16, with activities taking place in different parts of the world.

Speaking at the end of the debates with the topic,  Movement Against Second Slavery, om Monday, Femi said Nigerians are agitating already and Felabration is about getting people to “think and find immediate solutions to changing our lives for the better and putting Africa on the world map where it should be and making it great.”

The musician said the leaders and elites are part of the country’s problem as he dismissed the railway recently inaugurated by presidentMuhammed Buhari as ‘inferior’ and ‘archaic.’

“When my father started speaking in 1971, 1972, I was between nine and 10,” said the 54 year old.

“See how time has gone and we’re not moving forward. We’re still moving backwards. And we’re still praising mediocracy, we’re still praising stupidity. And you know who is praising it? The elite encouraging it who are supposed to be educating their people would not tell their people that this is wrong. That’s why I used the example of the train. The elites go to America, go to Europe. They see the trains.

“And the president, Muhammadu, you know the president has travelled all over the world. For him to even come and be launching that kind of railway line is an insult. Let us face the facts. And the elites, the Tinubus and everybody are praising him, that this is great job. What great job? We still cannot provide electricity for our people. This is electricity that we’ve been talking about since seventies. And we’re in 2016. So the Debates is here to keep on enlightening us so we don’t forget. The revolution is how to awaken the consciousness to understand that the revolution has already begun.”

Femi also lamented the economic retrogression that has become the country’s bane even as history was not being taught in schools.

”Many Nigerians don’t even know that there is a time it was two dollars to one naira,” said Femi.

“It was N250 to travel to Europe or America at one time. It makes one want to cry.”

The event which held in NECA House, Ikeja, Lagos had speakers such as Lemi Ghariokwu, the artist who designed many of Fela Kuti’s album sleeves, Sis. Affiong Affiong, co-founder of Moyo wa Taifa, a Pan African Women’s Network, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila andAdebola Williams, co-founder of RED Strat while Prof. Sophie  Ouwole, executive director Centre for African Culture and Development (CEFACAD) moderated.

Watch the Iraqi national team publicly sacrifice sheep so that they can qualify for Russia 2018 World Cup

Iraq's national football team is still without a point in Russia 2018 World Cup qualification as they’ve lost their first three matches which include defeats to Australia (2-0), Saudi Arabia (1-2) and Japan (2-1) and face a must win home match against Thailand in their next qualifier game.

In order to qualify for the World Cup they decided to perform the most bizarre, fetish and strangest of practices on Tuesday as they slaughtered a sheep publicly as a 'sacrifice to god' so that luck and good will could befall them in their next home game against Thailand- because according to the team, except God acts, it's impossible for them to qualify for Russia 2018.

In 2011, Turkish team Sivasspor slaughtered a sheep before a game with a Serbian team and won 4-1. In Iraq the practise is seen as an ancient and trust worthy one.

See what the Army did to this trader in Computer village, Lagos

Report by crime reporter Sunday Odita. Read below...
Nigerian Army personnel last Saturday beat the living daylights out of a computer salesman, Maxwell Nwosu at Ikeja. The Army personnel identified simply as Lieutenant Adeniji was allegedly hired to by Nwosu’s customer who bought a computer keyboard one month ago.
The Keyboard was said to have developed a fault, prompting the customer to contact the army personnel who followed him to the shop. The military personnel had pounced on the computer salesman and allegedly beat him to coma.

Narrating what transpired, Nwosu said: “Last Saturday at about 3:00pm, some group of soldiers, one claimed to be Lt. Adeniji, a resident of block 22 Ikeja cantonment is the chief perpetrator of this reckless misuse of office. “It will amaze you to know that this started purely as a civil matter between my brother and a customer who felt insulted and called his soldier brothers (all in mufti).

This issue was reported at a nearby police post and it was resolved peacefully even though we felt unfairly treated. To everyone's surprise, this men went back only to return with three other soldiers on uniform. The soldiers embarked on a beating spree. Myself and a customer who pleaded on my behalf were beaten to stupor and thrown into the gutter to roll in it. As I speak with you, I am still taking treatments and the other man’s condition is in bad shape in the hospital because of the injuries we sustained.

A lot of laptops and other valuables were destroyed in my office and my phone was smashed by one of the soldiers when he saw me making call. “One of the soldiers who was flagging something that looks like a knife threatened to stab my brother when they come back on Monday or anytime soon. Our office is now in total mess and our lives in danger all because of an of argument between civilians. “It would interest you to know that this has become a habit by soldiers from Ikeja cantonment who are often used by friends and relatives to cause serious havoc and unnecessary tension amongst civilians.

Today most of my customers who saw how I was ruthlessly assaulted before the public think I am a criminal.

“This is reckless abuse of uniform and show of impunity. Please I have so much faith in the army disciplinary unit, and do believe that by the time this matter is being investigated, the officers involved would be punished and be meant to pay for whatever they have destroyed out of their misconduct.

“This would serve as a deterrent to people who bring bad names to our institutions. Picture evidences are with me for more on this. The media should help me.” He said. Army spokesman in Lagos, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Kingsley noted that the issue has not been brought to the notice of the Nigerian Army 81 Division. Spokesman of 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ikeja, Major Wale Badamosi told The Guardian on telephone that he has directed the complainant on how to go about the matter. His words: “Someone called me yesterday on this matter and I advised him how to go about it.”
