Update! Nigerian couple convicted of trafficking Nigerian woman into the UK for exploitation

A Nigerian doctor and her husband have been convicted of trafficking a Nigerian woman into the UK for the purpose of exploitation.

Ayodeji Adewakun, 44 and her husband Abimbola Adewakun, 48, a nurse, both from St Katherine's Road in Erith appeared for trial at Southwark Crown Court.
They were found guilty on Thursday, 18 May, of one count of trafficking a woman to the United Kingdom for the purposes of exploitation.
The 29-year-old victim was brought by the couple to the UK from Nigeria.

She worked as a domestic worker for the Adewakuns between February 2007 and June 2009.
She was also brought to the UK from Nigeria and was contracted to work from 0700hrs to 1700hrs, Monday to Saturday, looking after the Adewakuns' children for £500 per month. They didn't pay her anything at all until May 2009, when she confronted Dr Adewakun about her lack of wages. A bank account was subsequently set up for her but even then, only four payments totalling £350 were deposited into this account for over two years' worth of work.

She was never given a day off, she worked night and day and eventually her health began to suffer.

When she eventually confronted Dr Adewakun about the way she was being treated, her situation worsened. She was no longer permitted to use the family bathroom and was made to wash her clothes by hand. She eventually escaped in June 2009 with the help of a family friend.

The case was referred to the Met's Modern Slavery and Kidnap Unit by Migrant Legal Action (formerly Afro-Asian Advisory Service). On 13 January 2015 Abimbola Adewakun was arrested and interviewed and later released on bail.

On 19 January 2015 Ayodeji Adewakun attended a police station by appointment and was interviewed under caution. She was not arrested.
Both defendants were charged on 10 November 2015 with trafficking for the purpose of exploitation.

Investigating Officer Detective Sergeant Nick Goldwater said:
"This couple deceived the victim by promising her a regular wage, which was far higher than her earnings in Nigeria. She hoped that she would be able to send money home and improve her family's standard of living.
"In reality, she was made to work day and night and barely paid anything. She was subject to intimidating behaviour by Dr Adewakun, who exerted control over her by keeping her socially isolated and withholding her passport.
"I hope that these convictions serve as a warning to anyone else committing this crime and encourages anyone being exploited to come forward. I also hope it brings a measure of comfort to the brave victim in this case."
Sentencing has been provisionally set for 16 June.
+ Adimbola Adewakun was found not guilty in relation to trafficking charges against a second victim
+ The jury did not reach a verdict in the case of Ayodeji Adewakun in relation to trafficking charges against a second victim,

Big Boy, Amobi, Caught With Cocaine Worth $1.4m

Alleged drug lord, Eneh Wilfried Amobi, has been apprehended by security operatives in India in possession of cocaine worth as much as $1.4million.

Amobi was nabbed at a suburban railway station in Mumbai.

Popular newspaper, The Hindustan Times, said a team from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) caught him after a tip-off by a ticket checker.

According to an official, 47yrs old Amobi was caught with a large quantity of contraband.

“Amobi said he was as a tourist and as he wanted $200 to return home, he offered to smuggle the drug,” Kumar Sanjay Jha, NCB zonal director, Mumbai and Goa region said.

The drugs, weighing 1.3kg, were concealed in courier packets in his bag.

“As foreign nationals are asked to show passports even for domestic flights, couriers prefer trains,” said the NCB zonal director.

The agency said Amobi was just one among the many couriers entrusted by a city-based cartel to smuggle the drugs into the city.

“We suspect that at least four people were involved. The packets changed hands at various railway stations to dodge authorities,” he said.

According to records, the suspects booked tickets in first class AC, second AC and AC 3 tier.

Unfortunately, in a report last week, The Hindustan Times disclosed that Nigerians topped the list of foreigners arrested for drug smuggling in Mumbai.

- Most of them are sentenced to death, yet our guys are still on it in their desperation to live large.

See how Nigerian police chained a man to their van

A 38-year-old commercial bus driver, Kester Edun, who was handcuffed by policemen to a patrol van and subjected to inhuman treatment for about seven hours in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, says he did not commit any offence.

Edun was handcuffed to the van after his passenger escaped arrest.

The victim, a father of one from Delta State, had earlier been stopped by the security operatives from the Esigie Police Division.

The policemen were said to have searched him but found nothing incriminating on him.

His passenger, however, fled when the security operatives found something on the ground suspected to be hemp.

A resident of the area, Augustine Ogbonmwan, who reportedly captured the brutality meted out to Edun on his mobile phone, was also detained by the police.

Edun said it dawned on him that the policemen were after him when they refused to go after the fleeing passenger.

He said, “The security operatives cuffed my hand to their van and dragged me on the road to compel me to admit to being an accomplice to the passenger.”

He claimed to have lost some amount of money and his phone in the process.

He said, “I did not have any incriminating thing on the bus. When the passenger was searched, they found an empty pack of cigarettes in his pocket. Later, the boy ran away. I asked them to run after him, but they ignored me.

“They handcuffed me to the vehicle, adding that I must accept that I was the boy’s accomplice. I told them that I did not know the boy, but they cuffed and dragged me from First (Junction) to Third Junction. The policemen parked and started hitting me and I did not know what happened afterwards because I fainted.”

It was learnt that Edun was later taken to a private hospital by the policemen, where he was handcuffed to a hospital bed and later detained in a cell at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for allegedly being a cult member, an allegation he denied.

It was, however, gathered that Edun and Ogbonwan were later released.

The bus driver said, “I am not a cult member. I did not do anything. They should also return my mobile phone and money. I remit N5,000 to the owner of the seized bus every day.”

Meanwhile, it was gathered that the erring policemen had been arrested and detained on the order of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 5, Abubakar Mohammed.

The AIG said that while the zonal command had commenced an investigation into the matter, the detained policemen would face an orderly room trial.

He said their action was unprofessional and a violation of the principle of democratic policing.

The AIG, however, did not disclose the identities of the policemen.

The state Governor, Godwin Obaseki, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, John Mayaki, on Thursday, said the law must be implemented decently.

The statement said, “This government resolutely believes that while the law must be rigorously enforced, it must be done within the bounds of decency, civility and legality.”

Watch video of thief caught red handed stealing on Arik Air flight from Lagos to Abuja

An elderly man was caught red handed this morning stealing from passengers of an Arik flight going from Lagos to Abuja. This will not be the first time such an incident will occur so the airline put security measures in place that led to the thief being apprehended.

Arik Air had someone pretend to be a regular passenger on the flight to watch what was going on, so as the journey began and passengers started to doze off because it was an early morning flight, the criminal carried out the act of transferring another passenger's belongings into his own bag. The spy let him finish with the theft then called the attention of Arik staff aboard the flight.

The videos captured by Japheth Omojuwa, who was also on the flight, showed passengers and Arik staff questioning the suspect while he denied the allegations and tried to hide his face from the camera. Apparently, those on the flight believed the alleged thief was not working alone as they kept on asking for his partner(s).

Authorities were alerted and as soon as the flight landed in Abuja, uniformed men came in and questioned the culprit and it seemed he fingered another man in the crime because, in another video shared, the uniformed men can be seen escorting two men out of the flight.

“Even at my age, I still go to Umkhosi woMhlanga (a ceremony for virgins),” said Thembisile at a social cohesion dialogue about virginity.

Thembisile Ntaka is a South African woman who's already 52 years old and still a proud virgin.

The event was organised by eThekwini Municipality at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Tuesday night.

“I began this journey when I was 14 years old. I get a lot of people criticising me for being a virgin and not having children. Some even tell me I will die a lonely woman. But that does not make me want to change my life.”

Thembisile said she has never slept with a man or even kissed one. She said she is one of the most respected women in Botha’s Hill.

“I’m the lastborn at home. My eight siblings got married and left me with my brother’s two children.”
She said when she was young she heard her brothers’ friends saying bad things about the girls they’d had s*x with.

“I decided then I didn’t want to be one of those girls,” she said.

Thembisile encouraged young ladies to stay virgins till marriage.

The cells were more like designer flats with en-suite bathrooms, colour-coordinated furniture, LED lighting and well-stocked fridge-freezers.
This is the luxurious prison where criminals enjoyed air-conditioned cells complete with plasma TVs, games consoles and even a ‘Kamasutra room’ that is used for conjugal visits with their wives and girlfriends.

Members of organised crime gangs from an overcrowded jail were transferred to a new maximum security prison.

But photos of their former pampered prison have been posted on social media.

The cells were more like designer flats with en-suite bathrooms, colour-coordinated furniture, LED lighting, food blenders, coffee machines and well-stocked fridge-freezers.

They included photos of nicely-decorated, air-conditioned cells with 52 inch flat-screen televisions, computer consoles and top games including FIFA and Grand Theft Auto.

Some of the inmates even had access to a special comfort room with mirrors and ambient lighting, dubbed the Kamasutra, for conjugal visits with their wives and girlfriends.

Entering the Kamasutra was reportedly a privilege for gang leaders and other senior gang members who earned the right through carrying out crimes for their bosses.

A total of 773 gang members were moved from the Marco Aurelio Soto prison in Tamara, near the Honduran capital city of Tegucigalpa, to the new El Pozo 2 jail in La Tova in the western Honduran department of El Paraiso.

And, when they could not enjoy the pleasures of female company, the inmates organised computer game tournaments to keep themselves amused behind bars.

All are believed to be members of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18 gangs in Honduras which is regarded as one the most dangerous countries in the world.

Hondurans were shocked when pictures of the conditions they had enjoyed at the severely overcrowded prison were posted on social media.

In one room, wall decorations included a mirror framed in the shape of a snake in the shape of ’18’ to denote the Barrio 18 gang.

The gang members were transferred to their new maximum security prison under a heavy security escort supervised by the President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez.

Prisons in Honduras are notorious hotbeds of gang activity, with fights, extortion, drug deals and killings common in the country’s overcrowded facilities.

You are absolutely right in this article. The truth is that Nigerians are generally not pleasant people. The worst part is that they actually think they are. Many Nigerians will steal from you, steal from the companies they work at. WOE UNTO THE PERSON that puts a Nigerian in charge of ‘procuring’ wares for their company. That person will triple the prices probably, and get you broke.
