Fayemi was in company of the Ondo state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, and other top leaders of the party in the state. The ruling party had organised a reception for him following his resignation from the federal cabinet and in readiness for the governorship campaigns ahead of the July 14 election. Premium Times reports that Taiwo Olatunbosun, a spokesperson for the APC in the state, said that on getting to the party secretariat, a gunman raised his weapon, aimed at Fayemi, and pulled the trigger, but missed him.

The gunshots were said to have emanated from the gun of an unknown gunman kitted fully in Mopol uniform at the APC Secretariat in Ado-Ekiti, PM News reports. A source speaking to PM News said: “The man was at the front of the podium and was hit severally by bullets. He was already in comma and has lost so much blood before he was rushed to the hospital.”
