Cheering news from Anambra state as 15 year old former child bride, Miss Chikwendu, whose story made news in January this year, returned to school today October 8th.
Chikwendu's forced marriage sparked widespread condemnation online and offline after a facebook user shared her story. Chikwendu was forced by her family to marry an older man named Izuchukwu Igwilo. Read her story
Following the public outcry, the state Commissioner For Women and Children affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, intervened and Chiukwendu was retrieved form the Igwilos. She was rehabilitated, trained in tailoring and empowered with other 100 Ndi Anambra by Industrial Training Fund, ITF.
Concluding the process of healing and rehabilitation, Chinwendu was today accompanied by the Honorable Commissioner, her elderly father and some staff of the ministry of women and children affairs to the school where she will continue with her education.
