Police have interviewed a US diplomat’s wife over a crash which killed a 19-year-old motorcyclist outside a military base in Northamptonshire. Anne Sacoolas, 42, is believed to have been driving on the wrong side of the road when she hit Harry Dunn’s bike outside RAF Croughton on August 27. She was granted diplomatic immunity, preventing her from being extradited to answer to UK authorities, which the victim’s twin brother described as a ‘punch in the face’. Sacoolas left the UK after the fatal crash against the Foreign Office wishes and claimed protection under an agreement covering the air base, where her husband worked. Northamptonshire Police chiefs have written to the US embassy demanding the wife of Jonathan Sacoolas lose her immunity.
Last week the force’s chief constable Nick Adderley said Sacoolas had been asked to be interviewed by officers under caution in the US. Officers have since travelled to America to do so and have shared details of their conversation with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for consideration. Mr Adderley has faced calls from Harry’s family to resign over a ‘disgraceful’ tweet in which he commented on potential legal action against the suspect and Donald Trump’s administration. In the now deleted post, he said: ‘How sad but how predictable’. Northamptonshire Fire, Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Stephen Mold has said he has spoken to Mr Adderley about keeping force communication ‘professional and sensitive at all times’. The police chief has since said he ‘meant no offence’ and apologised if his tweet had been ‘misconstrued or misinterpreted’.
Lawyers have since instructed the family that they should take legal action against Northamptonshire Police for their conduct throughout the investigation. Spokesman for the bereaved Radd Seiger said: ‘The courts will review their decision making processes as well as that of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. ‘The letter has been drafted and the lawyers have said it is good to go. ‘The courts should be reviewing their various decisions with how they proceeded with the investigation and how they have supported the family.’ In a statement, Mr Seiger called on Mr Adderley to ‘resign immediately following his disgraceful, now deleted, tweet’. He said he displayed a ‘staggering degree of unprofessionalism’ and ‘no longer commands the confidence of the family’.
