Shockwaves are reverberating across Yorùbáland and the global Yorùbá diaspora following the sudden death of the Baba Ọba (King’s Father) of the famed Oyotunji African Village in South Carolina, USA. The late Baba Ọba, Lukman Arohunfale, a revered socialite and traditionalist, passed away under circumstances already sparking fierce controversy. His death comes just days after he publicly accused the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Adéyẹmọ Owoade, of allegedly ordering his courtiers to beat him mercilessly during a recent courtesy visit to the Oyo palace in Nigeria. In a widely circulated voice recording, the deceased recounted how what was meant to be a simple homage turned violent. Several Nollywood stars were also in attendance and they include actor and producer, Kunle Afolayan as well as ace actress Joke Silva, Bimbo Akintola, Ufuoma McDermott, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, Ifeoma Fafunwa, Elvina Ibru, Ayo Animashaun, Dakore Akande and more who were spotted at the fun-filled festival while dressed in Orange- the colour of the day.
According to Kunle Afolayan, who documented the trip on social media,
“It’s was an eventful day yesterday in Amsterdam. The Netherland yesterday witnessed the best of Nigerian entertainment industry as we were invited and hosted by KLM Nigeria to be part of the Kings Day celebration. It’s was so so fun to have a blend of Dutch and NIGERIAN music, food, dance and general culture.”
