Shockwaves are reverberating across Yorùbáland and the global Yorùbá diaspora following the sudden death of the Baba Ọba (King’s Father) of the famed Oyotunji African Village in South Carolina, USA. The late Baba Ọba, Lukman Arohunfale, a revered socialite and traditionalist, passed away under circumstances already sparking fierce controversy. His death comes just days after he publicly accused the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Adéyẹmọ Owoade, of allegedly ordering his courtiers to beat him mercilessly during a recent courtesy visit to the Oyo palace in Nigeria. The congregation had surrounded the pastor asking him what he did with their money. In the video, some members of the congregation can be heard saying “we’ve had enough, we don’t want you“. Some were heard saying “we are members of the church, we have the right to demonstrate“.
Someone was heard saying “Pastor repent for the kingdom of God is at hand“, while another was heard saying “call the police, this is beyond you.” A man identified as Mr Yinka, later came out to insist that “this is not the right way of doing things… i don’t want to get involved…at the end of the day you are going to face God” The members later took up placards in demonstration against the pastor.
