Shockwaves are reverberating across Yorùbáland and the global Yorùbá diaspora following the sudden death of the Baba Ọba (King’s Father) of the famed Oyotunji African Village in South Carolina, USA. The late Baba Ọba, Lukman Arohunfale, a revered socialite and traditionalist, passed away under circumstances already sparking fierce controversy. His death comes just days after he publicly accused the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Adéyẹmọ Owoade, of allegedly ordering his courtiers to beat him mercilessly during a recent courtesy visit to the Oyo palace in Nigeria. This comes after the students from the University in the southwest, an English-speaking part of the country, on Monday embarked on a peaceful demonstration.
The students were demanding that the payment of CFAF 10,000, instituted by the Rector, for penalties for failure to meet the deadline for payment of tuition fees online, be terminated. They claim that they received an Academic Excellence bonus of 50,000 FCFA.
The students also demanded that lecturers, who speak and teach only in French, be fired.
In the video, French-speaking policemen were seen forcing four students to lie in the mud. One of them, female, was forced by a Police officer to stick her face in the mud continously .
