Takiya Holmes was struck by a stray bullet during a gang gunfight in her Chicago neighborhood. Her family immediately took her to hospital but doctors pronounced her dead soon thereafter.

However, they put her body on life support to keep her organs as fresh as possible after her grief-stricken mother, Naikeeia Williams, and the rest of her family expressed a wish to donate them to save the lives of others in need of organ transplants.

One of the recipients of the organs was Takiya's cousin, Darvece Monson, who was suffering from a chronic kidney ailment and needed a transplant urgently.
Darvece expressed her bittersweet gratitude—she was sad because she had lost her cousin but grateful at the same time for a second chance at life.
Police have arrested a 19-year-old man, Antwan Adams, and are charging him with the first-degree murder of Takiya Holmes.
