Shockwaves are reverberating across Yorùbáland and the global Yorùbá diaspora following the sudden death of the Baba Ọba (King’s Father) of the famed Oyotunji African Village in South Carolina, USA. The late Baba Ọba, Lukman Arohunfale, a revered socialite and traditionalist, passed away under circumstances already sparking fierce controversy. His death comes just days after he publicly accused the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Adéyẹmọ Owoade, of allegedly ordering his courtiers to beat him mercilessly during a recent courtesy visit to the Oyo palace in Nigeria. Racial tensions have been stoked in the United States after a police officer was caught telling a woman ‘we only kill black people’ during a traffic stop.
The shocking words of Cobb County, Georgia officer Lt. Greg Abbott as he speaks to the woman through the window of her car has led the police department to open an internal investigation into the incident, Metro writes.
Released Dashcam footage shows the officer telling her to use her phone which is on her lap, but she explains that she’s cautious after seeing ‘videos of cops’.
Then he replies: ‘But you’re not black. Remember, we only kill black people. We only kill black people, right? ’The footage has led to debates over the motive of Lt. Greg Abbott. Police chief Mike said it should not have been said ‘no matter what context it was said in’, while Attorney Lance LoRusso said Abbott was trying to ‘de-escalate’ a situation.
He said: “Lt. Greg Abbott is a highly respected 28-year veteran of the Cobb County Police Department.
“He was attempting to de-escalate a situation involving an uncooperative passenger. In context, his comments were clearly aimed at attempting to gain compliance by using the passenger’s own statements and reasoning to avoid making an arrest.”
America has been rocked by several high-profile killings in recent times involving black suspects.
Six police officers were indicted for the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody, while the murder of unarmed teenager Michael Brown birthed the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.
Twitter has predictably erupted following the release of the footage…
