Shockwaves are reverberating across Yorùbáland and the global Yorùbá diaspora following the sudden death of the Baba Ọba (King’s Father) of the famed Oyotunji African Village in South Carolina, USA. The late Baba Ọba, Lukman Arohunfale, a revered socialite and traditionalist, passed away under circumstances already sparking fierce controversy. His death comes just days after he publicly accused the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Adéyẹmọ Owoade, of allegedly ordering his courtiers to beat him mercilessly during a recent courtesy visit to the Oyo palace in Nigeria. He was sentenced by Justice M.O. Obadina of the High Court of Lagos State sitting in Lagos. David was re-arraigned on a one-count of stealing to the tune of N72,077,082 . During the trial, the prosecution counsel had called eleven witnesses and tendered 38 exhibits tagged P1-P38.
The defence had tendered three exhibits tagged D1, D2 and D3. However, exhibit D3 tendered by the defence was rejected by the court. In a judgement delivered on December 21, 2016, justice Obadina convicted the appealant and sentenced him to two years imprisonment for stealing the money, which is the property of Universal Steels Limited.
The judge had also ordered the appellant to make restitution to the complainant. Dissatisfied by the judgement of the lower court, the convict appealed to the appelate court to set aside the judgement of the lower court. But in a unanimous decision delivered by Hon. Justice Ogakwu Okechukwu, the appeal court held that the appeal lacked in merit and therefore affirmed the judgment of the trial court.
