Shockwaves are reverberating across Yorùbáland and the global Yorùbá diaspora following the sudden death of the Baba Ọba (King’s Father) of the famed Oyotunji African Village in South Carolina, USA. The late Baba Ọba, Lukman Arohunfale, a revered socialite and traditionalist, passed away under circumstances already sparking fierce controversy. His death comes just days after he publicly accused the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Adéyẹmọ Owoade, of allegedly ordering his courtiers to beat him mercilessly during a recent courtesy visit to the Oyo palace in Nigeria. The suspects: Friday Ojogbeli, Captain; Samuel Chidi Akomas, Chief Engineer; Lucky Okpowo, Chief Mate; and six others are all Nigerians.
Commodore I. A. Dewu, Commander NNS Delta at the handing over in Warri, stated that the suspects were onboard the vessel, MT NIPAL when they were intercepted by men of NNS Delta at Afremo Oil Field while siphoning crude oil on January 30, 2018. The Commander further stated that the vessel was laden with 386,556 M T crude oil.
Receiving the nine suspects and the Vessel on behalf of the Commission, Richard Ogberagha, a Senior Detective Superintendent, said the Commission would do a painstaking investigation to ensure that those found culpable were brought to book.
