I never collected kobo from Hushpuppi, he only sent N300k to buy native clothes, caps

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari has denied ever demanding or receiving a kobo from Nigerian socialite and Instagram celebrity, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas (popularly known as Hushpuppi).

But he did acknowledge that he connected him (Hushpuppi) to the man he (Kyari) buys native clothes and caps from, into whose bank account Hushpuppi paid N300,000 for some native dresses and caps.

Abbas, who is being tried in the US for cybercrime, had, according to court documents, alleged that he bribed Kyari to arrest a co-fraudster, Vincent.

During interrogation, Hushpuppi alleged that he gave Kyari money to arrest and jail “one of his rivals in Nigeria after a dispute over a $1.1 million scam on Qatari businesspeople,” the court documents stated.

But in his rebuttal to the allegation on Thursday, the celebrated Nigerian crime buster said the involvement of he and his team with Hushpuppi was to save people’s lives that were purported to have been threatened, and had no pecuniary connections.

According to him, Hushpuppi called his office about two years ago alleging that somebody in Nigeria was threatening to kill his family here in Nigeria.

He sent the person’s phone number and pleaded we take action before the person attacks his family.

“We traced and arrested the suspect, and after investigations, we discovered there wasn’t an actual threat to anyone’s life.”

Kyari said his team discovered that they (Hushpuppi and the suspect) were long time friends who had money issues between them; so the suspect was released from custody.

However, he said Hushpuppi later saw some of his (Kyari’s) native dresses and cap on his social media page, and showed interest in them.

Kyari said he connected him (Hushpuppi) to the seller of the materials, and Hushpuppi later sent N300,000 to the person’s account.

“The native clothes and caps (5 sets) were brought to our office and he sent somebody to collect them in our office,” Kyari wrote on his social media page.

“Nobody demanded any money from Abbas Hushpuppi and nobody collected any money from him. We responded to a distress call he made on threat to his family and released the suspect when we discovered there was no life threat from the suspect.

“This is the true story.”

He said those who are “celebrating that this is an indictment on us and mentioning some fictitious Big Money will be disappointed once again, as our hands are clean and our record of service for two decades is open for everybody to see.”
