Shockwaves are reverberating across Yorùbáland and the global Yorùbá diaspora following the sudden death of the Baba Ọba (King’s Father) of the famed Oyotunji African Village in South Carolina, USA. The late Baba Ọba, Lukman Arohunfale, a revered socialite and traditionalist, passed away under circumstances already sparking fierce controversy. His death comes just days after he publicly accused the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Adéyẹmọ Owoade, of allegedly ordering his courtiers to beat him mercilessly during a recent courtesy visit to the Oyo palace in Nigeria. In a widely circulated voice recording, the deceased recounted how what was meant to be a simple homage turned violent. The teenage student, identified by his nickname Xiaochen, was hit 12 times by his Chinese teacher, named locally as Sun Yingchun. According to reports, the affected student was working with other students in a self-study room, before Mr Yingchun stormed in and accused them of being too loud. He then spotted Xiaochen talking to a girl and he dragged the teenager from his seat and hit him across the face a dozen times.
Xiaochen, a senior student at Suyu High School, in northeast China, ended up with a reddened, swollen face and was taken to Suqian Chinese Medicine Hospital. Medical examination revealed that Xiaochen sustained a concussion, soft tissue injuries, burst vessels near the eye and partial temporary hearing loss.
His fellow students reported that Mr Yingchun had hit a female student, before turning the full force of his fury to Xiaochen.
