The late Baba Ọba, Lukman Arohunfale, a revered socialite and traditionalist, passed away under circumstances already sparking fierce controversy. His death comes just days after he publicly accused the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Adéyẹmọ Owoade, of allegedly ordering his courtiers to beat him mercilessly during a recent courtesy visit to the Oyo palace in Nigeria. Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly has hit out at the practice of tithing that requires Christians to give 10% of their earnings to the church despite the fact that It is estimated that 80% of Nigerians live on less than $2 (£1.40) a day.
He told the BBC Yoruba service that it should not be
compulsory saying, 'tithing is not compulsory. No-one should feel compelled to pay - no-one is holding a gun to their head" .
He continued to say, 'Churches where pastors are becoming fat and the members are growing lean, God will judge them'.
