Ban Ki Moon bows out as UN Sec.-General

United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon bade goodbye to Permanent Representatives and staff at UN headquarters in New York on Friday, being his last official working day as UN scribe.

Ban, whose 10-year tenure comes to an end on Dec. 31, was full of appreciation for the opportunity to serve. He was also full of praise for the UN staff for their hard work and was thankful to those who had gathered to wish him well.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” the outgoing secretary-general, who assumed office on Jan. 1, 2007, said continuously, as he waved to his well-wishers, some of whom were close to tears.

“I thank all of you the staff and the delegations for your hard work and leadership for humanity.

“I have been motivated by this commitment and I am proud to call you my colleagues,” the two-term scribe, whose tenure has been described by many as “eventful”, said.

He re-emphasised that sustainable development, climate change, gender empowerment and youth, among other issues, had been at the top of his agenda in his 10-year tenure.

It has been a privilege to serve the world’s people. And it has been an honour to serve with you and all our partners, including Member States, civil society, and many more,” he stressed.

The eighth UN scribe urged the enthusiastic gathering to “keep believing and working hard” to achieve the noble goals of the UN and to be a “voice for the voiceless”.

Trump set to repeal many of Obama's laws and policies as soon as he takes office

The US president-elect is yet to be sworn in but he is already taking a wrecking ball to Obama's legacy. This is according to his chief press secretary, Sean Spicer who made a series of revelations during an appearance on ABC's This Week. Spicer told host, Jonathan Karl, that the future Commander-in-chief will 'sign a series of executive orders' on day one, so he can do two things.

The first, Spicer said, will be to 'repeal a lot of the regulations and actions that have been taken by this administration over the last eight years that have hampered both economic growth and job creation.' He added that the second thing Trump will do is bring in 'forward thinking.'
Spicer said Trump will 'bring a new brand to Washington,' by implementing a five-year lobbying ban or a lifetime ban on anyone who wants to serve a foreign government.
'If you want to serve in a Trump administration, you’re going to serve this country, not yourself,' Spicer said.

No specific policies or laws were mentioned but Obamacare could be in Trump's line of fire along with the Transpacific trade deal.
Spicer also revealed Trump won't slow down on his use of social media even though the president elect said in a previous interview that he'll cut back on his tweeting once in office. Spicer said the platform allows Trump to have a 'direct conversation' with the public that isn't 'funneled through the media.'

'The fact of the matter is that, when he tweets, he gets results.
'So whether it’s Twitter, holding a news conference, picking up the phone, having a meeting, he is going to make sure that he continues to fight for the American people every single day.'
Hang on America, it's not going to be a smooth ride.

Mike Adenuga's net worth increased by $2.7 billion in 2016, while Dangote's decreased by $5billion

Billionaire Nigerian oil and telecom tycoon, Mike Adenuga, got richer in 2016. According to Forbes Magazine, his net worth increased $2.7 billion to $5.8 billion since December 31, 2015 and no other African billionaire added more than $1 billion to his or her net worth in the past year.

Meanwhile, Aliko Dangote, who is still the richest man in Africa has lost more than half his networth of 2014. He was worth $25billion in 2014 but worth $12.4 billion by the end of 2016...

According to Forbes
While Aliko Dangote is still Africa’s richest man by far, he’s not as rich as he used to be. In February 2014, his fortune hit an all-time high of $25 billion. Today, he’s just worth half of that. FORBES estimates that he is currently , down from $17.2 billion this time last year on the back of a Central Bank devaluation of the Naira, Nigeria’s currency, in June. Having shed $4.8 billion off his fortune within the last 12 months, Dangote is Africa’s biggest billionaire loser in dollar terms in 2016

On Mike Adenuga
"The increase in Adenuga’s net worth is largely due to new information Forbes obtained in 2016 about the value of his assets. Adenuga owns Nigerian telecom company Globacom and Nigerian oil company Conoil Producing. While Adenuga's net worth has increased since the beginning of 2016, it has dropped significantly since March 2016, when FORBES valued his fortune at $10 billion on the 2016 Billionaires List. Since then, his net worth has dropped $4.2 billion, due to the devaluation of the Nigerian Naira and the country's struggling oil sector. Adenuga was the only Nigerian billionaires whose net worth increased this year. (Aliko Dangote, the richest Nigerian and Africa's richest man, saw his fortune drop nearly 28% to $12.4 billion over the course of 2016.)"

Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City: Guardiola fails Anfield test

Liverpool strengthened their grip on second place in the Premier League by closing out 2016 with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over fellow title aspirants Manchester City.

Chelsea's record-equaling 13th consecutive victory against Stoke City earlier on Saturday left their closest challengers looking at respective nine and 10-point deficits when they kicked off at Anfield, although this did nothing to dull Liverpool's senses as Georginio Wijnaldum headed them into an ultimately decisive early lead.

For much of the first period, Jurgen Klopp could claim tactical mastery over his old Bundesliga sparring partner Pep Guardiola in the City dugout and it is Liverpool's superstar manager who now looks the most likely challenger to Antonio Conte in the battle for the league title.

Guardiola's men carried more threat after half-time, but they will drop to fifth in the table if Arsenal and Tottenham pick up wins over Crystal Palace and Watford on New Year's Day respectively.

A grapple for a place in the top four would mark something of a downgrade on Guardiola's previous exploits in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but Klopp, who ultimately laboured under his rival's latter successes while in charge of Borussia Dortmund, might just have introduced him to a new reality.

City began confidently, but the breakthrough came for the hosts on their first attack of note in the eighth minute.

Adam Lallana drifted in from the left and his floated cross was met by Wijnaldum, whose perfectly time run allowed him to tower over Aleksandar Kolarov and plant a header past Claudio Bravo.
The early advantage allowed Liverpool to operate in a more composed fashion than the frenetic pressing normally associated with Klopp's sides, while City's attempts to mix short and long passing resulted in them appearing ragged in possession by the half's midway point.

Emre Can, included to bolster the Liverpool midfield at the expense of striker Divock Origi, arced a shot over as the half-hour approached and City wore an increasingly laboured look.

Lallana should have had the chance to double the lead at the break, but, having pickpocketed Yaya Toure, he errantly darted offside before Roberto Firmino sent him through on goal.

Liverpool full-back Nathaniel Clyne failed to control convincingly and prodded wide having ghosted into the box within a minute of the restart.

City's showing remained fractured, although David Silva sashayed in from the right in the 55th minute and drove narrowly beyond the far post, while a stretching Raheem Sterling - barracked throughout at his old stomping ground - volleyed Toure's raking pass into the side netting.

Those chances sparked the visitors' most convincing spell of the contest, tempo suddenly injected into their play, and Wijnaldum unwittingly blocked from Kevin De Bruyne.

But Liverpool held firm amid growing anxiety, despite the departure of captain Jordan Henderson through injury, with City's returning top scorer Sergio Aguero largely feeding off scraps.

There would be no celebrations for the travelling support - featuring City captain Vincent Kompany - in the Anfield Road End and Guardiola has plenty to ponder as he enters 2017 with a team still not as smoothly grooved as Klopp's Liverpool.

Tragic! Man dresses as Santa and kills 39 at Istanbul Night Club

A gunman reportedly dressed in a Santa costume has killed at least 39 people, including 16 foreigners, at a famous nightclub in Istanbul during New Year's Eve celebrations.

Armed with a long-barrelled weapon, the attacker shot a police officer before storming the elite Reina club in the Ortakoy area of the city at about 1.45am.

"Unfortunately (he) rained bullets in a very cruel and merciless way on innocent people who were there to celebrate New Year's and have fun," Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said, describing the carnage as a "terror attack".

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the gunman was still at large. "The search for the terrorist continues... Our security forces have started the necessary operations. God willing he will be caught in a short period of time."

Raising the death toll to 39, Mr Soylu said that of 21 victims who had been identified so far, 16 were foreigners and five were Turks. Another 69 people were being treated in hospital for their wounds.

The Queen misses New Year's day church service

The Queen today missed a New Year's Day church service because of a lingering heavy cold.
She and the Duke of Edinburgh fell ill days before Christmas, forcing her to delay her trip to the Norfolk estate and to miss a Christmas Day ceremony at St Mary Magdalene church.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen was still suffering the effects of the cold and had decided not to attend the service with other members of the royal family.

A Palace spokeswoman said: "Her Majesty The Queen will not attend Sunday worship at Sandringham. The Queen does not yet feel ready to attend church as she is still recuperating from a heavy cold."

But Prince Philip, who has recovered from his own cold, was well enough to attend the ceremony, led by the Bishop of Norwich, with other members of the royal family.

Turkish Police release first picture of prime suspect in Istanbul Nightclub attack ..photo

Turkish police have released the first picture of the prime suspect in the Istanbul nightclub attack in which 39 people were gunned down. The unnamed man (pictured right) is described as being from a Muslim region of Western China, Afghanistan or Chechnya.

Turkish intelligence reportedly believes that the suspect is a member of the East Turkestan branch of
ISIS but still do not know his name or precise nationality.

Mother-of-one Hatice Koc'un (pictured left) was among those murdered during the attack.

She was working at the Reina nightclub on the night of the attack, as Turkey requires a female guard to be present to search women guests.

Jammeh accuses ECOWAS of declaring a war against Gambia

In his New Year Message to Gambians, dictator Yahya Jammeh accuses the Economic Community of West African States bloc (ECOWAS) of declaring a war against The Gambia and her people by taking a biased, partisan, and partial stance on the current Gambian political impasse. But Jammeh said The Gambia will not be intimidated by powers that be, as he reaffirmed his government’s determination to defend the country and her people from any external aggression or threat.

“I have noticed that there are appeals in some quarters for me to step down. This tantamount to disregarding this constitutional provision that should govern the resolution of the current impasse. Most, if not all reasons advanced for their appeals for me to reembrace my initial position are based on fears of a military confrontation that leads to violence and concerns for an outbreak of war in our peaceful country of ours. But a military confrontation with who?  Let me make it very clear: That we are ready to defend this country against any aggression and there will be no compromise for that,” Jammeh said during a national televised speech on Saturday.

“Let me make it clear: Most, if not all the reasons advanced for their appeals for me to reembrace my initial position are based on fears of a military confrontation that leads to violence and concerns for an outbreak of war in this peaceful country of ours.  A military confrontation with who?  Let me make it very clear: That we are ready to defend this country against any aggression and there will be no compromise on this,” he added.

Mr. Jammmeh chastised ECOWAS for its recent move to intervene in Gambia’s political impasse. He says ECOWAS, has no mandate to meddle into Gambia’s internal domestic political impasse since in his own words the West African bloc has manifested its total lack of neutrality in peacefully resolving the matter.

“My government will inshala will never up for such confrontation, unless we are compelled to defend our sovereignty, independence and dignity. Defending our independence and total sovereignty is scared duty to all patriotic Gambians; more so The Gambia Armed Forces. What is clearly incontrovertible is that the decision of ECOWAS on the current situation to implement the results of the December 1st election by whatever means possible is totally illegal as it violates the principles of noninterference of internal affairs of member states, which is an entrenched clause in the ECOWAS Treaty. It is in effect a declaration of War and an insult to our constitution. It is therefore absolutely unacceptable. This blatant impartial and one dimensional approach clearly indicates that the role of ECOWAS is not predicated on the pursuit of justice in the resolution of the stalemate,” Jammeh noted.

“This partisanship of ECOWAS has also disqualified it to provide mediation services, as a genuine mediator has to be neutral and impartial to win the trust and confidence of the parties to the conflict. Thus, we will not enter into negotiations brokered by ECOWAS, if it does not recognize that the provisions of The Gambians constitution provide the basic legal principles to guild the sorting out of the details of this stalemate in order to arrive to a peaceful resolution legally binding on both parties. Without this quest for justice, within the contest of the constitution of The Gambia, and for the elimination for the threat of use of force, which is the position of ECOWAS, the impasse will continue with the risk of an escalation of a military confrontation. We have been principle. We vehemently condemn violence, but we shall never condone injustice and we will not be threatened. Our sovereignty is not for compromise,” he added.

Mr. Jammeh, who began his speech by reminding Gambians to revisit the words contain in the country’s national anthem, claimed that there are countries in the region, which are envy of Gambia’s longstanding peace and stability. He says he is ready to defend The Gambia, and the last person, in the event of any external aggression.

“On the basis of deliberate policy, my government developed an atmosphere of peace and stability, in our country, and we remain strongly committed to guard the sustenance of this culture of peace; that’s the envy of many nations, and we will defend it to the last person,” Jammeh said.

Mr. Jammeh praised Mustapha Carroyol, the former Chairman of the IEC for presiding over credible elections in the past. He accuses the current IEC Chairman of cheating.

“My suspicion of the IEC chairman and the falsification of the results arose. I will not tolerate anyone to cheat me.  Some interest groups and individuals have champion the campaign for me to step down. The campaign dismisses the legitimacy of my change of position after my initial concession of defeat. Yet fellow Gambians, change of the better is common place in decision making processes in pursuit of good governance,” Jammeh said, as he maintains that the only way out to resolve the current political impasse is to organize fresh elections.

“Not results cooked by the IEC in favor of a particular candidate. This decision of post electoral decision is provided for by the constitution of the Gambia. In  filing a petition before the supreme court, I am merely defending the oath I took in defending the constitution of the Gambia and to exercise my right for appeal as a candidate,” Jammeh said.
