South African anti-apartheid icon, Andrew Mlangeni, dies at 95

South African anti-apartheid figure, Andrew Mlangeni, who stood trial alongside Nelson Mandela in the 1963-64 Rivonia Trial, has died at the age of 95. Mlangeni's death was announced on Wednesday, July 22. He was the last surviving Rivonia trialist, spending more than a quarter of a century imprisoned on Cape Town’s notorious Robben Island before his release in 1989.

Gabon President Ali Bongo on Thursday, July 16, promoted his defence minister, Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda to prime minister, making her the first woman in the country to hold the office of Prime Minister. Ibrahim Magu has been suspended as Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by President Muhammadu Buhari, the BBC reports. Multiple sources at the presidency also confirmed the development. Magu spent the night in a police cell at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Headquarters in Abuja.

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, who was earlier on Monday arrested by officials of the Department of State Services in Wuse II in Abuja, Ibrahim Magu, has been moved to Aso Rock Villa to face an inter-agency committee set up to investigate allegations of corruption against him.

More details have emerged on how Ibrahim Magu, acting EFCC chairman, was whisked away by security agents earlier today. Mr. Magu’s arrest on Monday afternoon at the Wuse II office of the EFCC. Multiple sources said that the security agents who arrested Mr. Magu took him directly to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he was to appear before a presidential panel investigating alleged corruption and insubordination.
