The quiet town of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital was set alight Wednesday when a gang of dare-devil armed robbers struck a few meters from the Government House in the city centre.
The broad daylight robbery reportedly took place at about 11 a.m. at Dominic Utuk Avenue, near Christ the King Primary School, Wellington Bassey Way, which is just several blocks from the seat of power in the south-south state.
Details of the heist remain unclear as at the time of filing this report but a source who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES said the robbers trailed their victim from a bank down to where the attack took place at Dominic Utuk Avenue. It is not yet clear if any life was lost in the mayhem.
Photos of the crime scene making the rounds on social media show a black Toyota Corolla, with the number plate AK 705 CO1, riddled with bullets. Unconfirmed reports say the vehicle belongs to the Akwa Ibom State government.
A police source said the robbery suspects were swiftly apprehended somewhere in the city, few hours after the incident.
Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has yet to respond to enquiries about the mayhem, but sources say the Commissioner of Police in the state, Muazu Halilu, has visited the crime scene.
