My 50-yr-old ‘admirer’ buys me expensive gifts, but I’m in love with a younger colleague

Dear Esabod

I work in a small office with a staff of 12. We’re all very friendly and I’ve been with the company for 12 years. Five years ago, a man in his 50’s joined us. He lives on the next street to mine and didn’t have a car. I gave him a lift from time to time.

At Christmas and Valentine Day, he would buy me small gifts to thank me. Two years ago he bought me an impressive gift that I helped him to pick out as he said it was for his daughter. Over time, he kept buying me more gifts, saying they expressed his gratitude. I had always felt sorry for this man because he lived alone. Then, some months ago, he told me he was in love with me. I told him firmly, but kindly that there was no way we would get together, but he started trying to give me money for my rent and car. He also began asking me personal questions. I know now that I should have put a stop to this, but I still felt sorry for him as no one else had much time for him. A few weeks later, he started saying that he wanted to touch me and couldn’t control himself much longer. He said I should move in with him and have his children. He said I’d be free to do whatever I wanted as long as I was with him.
I decided to avoid contact with him and stopped the lifts. Someone asked me why I wasn’t giving him lifts any more and all hell broke loose. Everyone at work supports me and a few had told him off. I’ve recently started a new relationship with someone my own age, who works for the same company. He knows a little about this man and has offered to have a word with him. But that might start trouble. This older man keeps putting my boyfriend down, especially regarding money. I’ve told him I can’t be bought, but he seems to think his patience will pay off.
He also says things in front of strangers that imply we’re a couple. This is all starting to get to me. He retires at the end of the year, but what do I do until then? Dora, by e-mail

Dear Dora, You need to tell your ageing admirer the simple truth. In other words, you have to be cruel to be kind. The man sensed your gratitude when he gave you gifts, allowing himself to believe his increasing generosity might make you love him. He’s obviously lonely and hopes you’ll be his soul-mate and he feels somehow cheated when another man cuts in. You need to let him know you like him a lot as a colleague, but you don’t fancy him and never will. He currently feels confused, hurt and embarrassed by the sudden rift that has emerged between you. But he needs to build a new life for himself with a partner near his age. Don’t be hostile to him, however, and let him know you’re still his friend. Fear of retirement and loneliness is obviously making him desperate. Encourage him to go out with both male and female friends so as to boost his social life. If you can, seek out his daughter to help. Friendship is something we all need as long as it’s not taken to mean something else.

SEX SCANDAL: We want public investigative hearing —3 lawmakers demand

Reps-sex scandalABUJA—THE three members of the House of Representatives accused of improper conduct, attempted rape and soliciting for prostitutes in Ohio, the United States of America, yesterday told the leadership of the House to convoke a public investigative hearing on the allegations against them. This is as one of the accused lawmaker, Mark Gbillah, who represents Gwer East/Gwer West Federal Constituency of Benue State, denied any culpability in the allegation, saying he had never cheated on his wife since he got married. Meanwhile, speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who presided over the plenary, referred the allegations to the Committees on Ethics and Privileges and Foreign Affairs to carry out investigations on the matter. Dogara also cautioned commentators on the allegation to tread with caution as an accused was assumed innocent until proven guilty. The three members, according to a letter from the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. James Entwistle, to the speaker are Mohammed Garba Gololo (APC, Bauchi); Samuel Ikon (PDP, Akwa Ibom) and Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue). Entwistle had in the petition to Dogara, alleged that the actions of the three lawmakers at the International Visitor Leadership Programme, brought disrepute to the parliament. He alleged that they solicited for sex from prostitutes and grabbed hotel housekeeper in a bid to rape. Relying on House Order 6, Rule 20 and 22 that deals with privileges of members, Gbillah stated that it was important that the matter be specifically addressed on the floor of the House, adding that the allegation was completely false. Speaking on behalf of the other accused members, the Benue State-born lawmaker said: “For my colleagues who don’t know me and Nigerians out there, I want to categorically state here, for any avoidance of doubt, that no such incident occurred. “I want my colleagues and the nation to understand that though we are in the eye of the storm, we will bear this cross and courageously too. “I want to say that this is calculated to tarnish the image of the three members and this very hallowed institution. And I caution Nigerians who are quick to conclusion, I want to state categorically for all Nigerians to know again, that I love my wife without reservation. “I only have eyes for my wife. I have never cheated on her. I wish she was able to come to this hallowed chambers to testify to this. I went on this trip with my wife and my baby. I travel everywhere I go with my wife and baby.” Maintaining his innocence on the allegations, Gbillah, who said he had travelled to many parts of the world without any allegation against him, efforts should be made immediately to invite the U.S. Ambassador to come and testify with evidence before his tenure runs out in Nigeria. He also insisted that the investigation should be through public hearing, so the public would know the truth in the allegation. Besides, he said non of the accused was interrogated either in the United States or in the US Embassy in Nigeria before the ambassador rushed to make his conclusions. “We are in the eye of the storm, we demand justice should be done,” Gbillah in an emotional voice stated. Making her contribution, Nnenna Elendu Ukeje, said that the issue had become a matter between Nigeria and the United States, adding that it was an issue that dealt on strategic relationship between the two countries. Ukeje, who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, advised the committees handling the matter not to in any way jeopardise the relationship between the two countries. While referring the matter to the Committees on Ethics and Privileges and Foreign Affairs, the speaker said the matter was a very serious one where many people had come to with the conclusion that the three lawmakers were wrong. She said anybody thinking that the matter was only about the there members or the House alone was wrong, stressing that if the matter was not properly investigated, it could be extended to other Nigerians. She said that going by the House Rule, any such allegation of impropriety was always referred to the Committee on Ethics. “I have appointed the Committee on Foreign Affairs to join in the investigation because of the diplomatic relationship. “The standard in the US is that an accused is assumed innocent until proven guilty and that is the same standard in Nigeria. Any one who has evidence can now see the committee,’’ Ukeje said.

INSIDE STORY: Real reason Governor Fayose’s account was frozen

Ayodele Fayose, Ekiti State Governor
On Monday the governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, a relentless critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, stirred yet another controversy.
He told journalists that he had gone to do some transactions at a Zenith Bank branch in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, but was shocked to find that his account with the bank had been frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Mr. Fayose, who by virtue of being a governor enjoys constitutional immunity from criminal prosecutions, said the decision to freeze his account was illegal.
He however suggested that the freezing of his account was connected with ongoing investigation by the anti-graft commission into the campaign funding of the opposition Peoples Democratic.
“I found out that the EFCC had blocked my account and the account of some of my associates. I see this as illegal. If you want to fight corruption, fight corruption based on rule of law,” he said.
“I’m a sitting governor and under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution I enjoy immunity. You must do anything you want to do within the ambit of the law. This government has no respect for constitutional provisions. They should not be in a hurry. In 2018, I will be done. I will come to them myself. I have become a figure in this country that I have nowhere to go.
“This rascality of the EFCC must stop. Did they not contest election? Where did they get the funds from? Is it because they are the sitting government? So any other person that conducted election apart from the APC is a thief?”
However, while confirming that Mr. Fayose’s account was indeed blocked, the spokesperson of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said the governor’s immunity does not stop the agency from investigating him.
“It is true that we have frozen Governor Fayose’s account in connection with an ongoing investigation. We will soon release the details of our findings to the public.
“We froze the account because Fayose has no immunity against investigation.”
Mr Uwujaren did not give further detail of the nature of investigation Mr. Fayose is under.
However, a top security source familiar with the investigation has given PREMIUM TIMES a mind-boggling details of how N1.3 billion from the office of the National Security Adviser under the ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration was traced to Mr. Fayose’s blocked account.
The Obanikoro connection
According to our source, the journey of how the money got to Mr Fayose’s account started in November 2011 following the incorporation of Silver Magna Merra Limited, a company linked to the sons of former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro.
Mr. Obanikoro and his sons, who are hiding in the United States, are also being investigated for the alleged misappropriation of the funds meant for the purchase of arms to fight the deadly Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s north-east region.
At inception, Silver Magna Merra had three directors – Ikenna Ezekwe, Adeniyi Elizabeth and one Oshodi. However, on May 7, 2012, the company passed a resolution making the sons of Mr Obanikoro – Gbolahan and Babajide- and Ikenna Ezekwe signatories to the companies account.
According to our source, Mr. Obanikoro raised Mr. Ezekwe’s after he lost his father.
“Between April to December 2014, the company received N4.7 billion from the office of the NSA,” our source said. “The company distributed N2.7 billion to various companies, Bureau de Change, the PDP, and politicians.”
Our source further explained that N2 billion was withdrawn in cash and on June 12, 2014, Mr Obanikoro, alongside some of his allies, personally moved N1.3 billion to Akure in a chartered aircraft.
“The money was handed over to one Abiodun Agbele alias Abbey they handed the money to the Zenith Bank manager in Ado Ekiti and asked him to sign that he collected N1.3 billion but the man insisted that they had to count the money. After counting they discovered that it was N80 million short. Abiodun collected over N240 million.”
According to our source, N137 million was paid to Mr. Fayose’s personal account while N100 million was deposited in the account of Spotless Hotel, owned by Mr. Fayose, while another N700 million was credited to the account of De-Privateer Limited, owned by Mr. Agbele.
Sometimes in August 2014, Abiodun paid N118 million cash and N50 million in cash to make a total of N168 million into Fayose’s account. We are still analyzing those financial transaction,” the source added.
When contacted for comments, Mr. Fayose’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, told PREMIUM TIMES that the governor did not receive any money from Mr Obanikoro and that no transaction was traced to Mr. Fayose’s account.
“There was no N1.3 billion traced to any of the governor’s accounts. He did not receive any money from Obanikoro and there’s no transaction in his account from an Obanikoro,” he said via mobile messaging app, Whatsapp.
“Governor Fayose’s election was never funded with public fund. His election was funded by corporate organisations and it is even on record that for the first time in the history of election in Nigeria, campaign vests and other souvenirs were gladly bought by the people.
“The reality is that they are afraid of Governor Fayose and they can’t just help being afraid because their government is evil and Fayose won’t stop exposing them.”
He said the governor would not stop criticising the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration neither would he stop championing the cause of true democracy.
“Governor Fayose is not bothered about this prosecution, he remains resolute in his commitment to championing the return of real democracy to Nigeria because as it appears, Buhari has returned us to dictatorship.”
He wondered why the EFCC had not investigated crimes allegedly committed by the immediate past administration in the state.
“Nigerians should begin to ask these people what EFCC has done to all the petitions from Ekiti against the APC government of Dr. Kayode Fayemi.,” said.
