Aircraft carrying Super Falcons emits smoke, as plane develops electrical fault

Five members of the Super Falcons team participating at the on-going African Women’s Nations Cup in Cameroon were forced to travel by road from Douala to Yaoundé yesterday, as the aircraft they were supposed to fly developed electrical fault shortly before take off.

The team, which defeated the Banyana Banyana of South Africa 1-0 to qualify for the final of the championship, had left their Parliamentarian Flat hotel in Buea at 6.00 a.m. and arrived in Douala for their flight to Yaoundé. They were scheduled to depart Douala at 9.00 a.m. for the state capital, a journey of about 45 minutes by air and about four hours by road.

The Nigerians arrived at Douala airport alongside their South African counterparts, who will face Ghana’s Black Queens in tomorrow’s third-place match.

But on getting to Douala airport, CAF officials could not secure enough seats for the entire Nigerian team to continue their journey inside one plane.

“The team experienced some delay at the airport, but at the end, all the players and officials could not travel together in one plane because it was a small aircraft which could not accommodate both Nigeria and the South African team at the same time. As a result, five members of the team were left behind.

“Those five people were later checked into another plane, but just as they were preparing to commence the journey to Yaoundé, smoke started coming out from the plane due to electrical problem and everybody was evacuated. The five people had to embark on their journey by road to Yaoundé,” a member of the team said.

She added that even those who made the trip by air had to leave their luggage behind in Douala due to the small nature of the plane.

They were expecting their bags to arrive their Djeuga Palace hotel in Yaoundé at 8.00 p.m. yesterday.

The incidence is coming about 24 hours after a Brazilian football team was involved in a plane crash on their way to a match in Colombia.

Police free 11 hostages as man robs bank for two hours

A hostage situation at a Jacksonville, Florida bank has ended with all 11 hostages freed and the suspect in custody - despite a tense two-hour stand-off that saw hostages repeatedly threatened with death, police said.

At around 9am an unidentified man entered the Community First Credit Union on West Edgewood Avenue with a dog and handgun and held the place up, cops said.

Police and SWAT teams descended on the bank, where the suspect put his gun to the heads of victims and threatened to kill them 'multiple' times, authorities said.

Sheriff Mike Williams initially wrongly identified the suspect - described as a black male in his 20s or 30s - as DeAndre Shuman.

The Sheriff's Office later confirmed that Shuman was innocent, and said they were working to identify the actual robber.

An 18-year-old teller named Andre Shuman was confirmed earlier in the day as one of the hostages.

Speaking to reporters, Sheriff Mike Williams said that the robber - who was not employed at the bank - threatened to kill
hostages 'multiple' times during the two-hour ordeal.

His threats and activity 'escalated and became more intense', Williams said, until there was no choice but to have the SWAT team breach the bank and rescue the hostages.

SWAT held back until an opportunity presented itself, Williams said.

That opportunity came when two hostages, who had hidden from the robber, made a break for the exit.

They were believed to have coordinated the escape with SWAT teams outside, ABC said.

As the pair ran the gunman was distracted, Williams said - that gave the SWAT team the opportunity it needed, and a large black tank-like battering ram was deployed to breach the entrance of the building.

SWAT officers used it as a shield to enter the bank, then put themselves between the suspect and the hostages.

Surrounded, the gunman gave himself up and was taken into custody without injury, Williams told reporters.

None of the hostages had been injured. The dog was reportedly also safe with police.

One witness, Clara Cruise, thanked 'the Lord' as she saw her daughter, who works in the bank, being removed from the scene by SWAT officers.

'God be the glory! Oh, hallelujah!' she said, laughing with relief, as she watched her daughter safe and sound with police officers.

Another anxious family member seen outside the bank during the incident was Latasha Shuman. She told News4Jax her 18-year-old son Andre had texted her from inside the bank.

A 29-year-old notorious internet fraudster, who specialized in impersonating the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, on the internet, has been arrested by the police for defrauding a Saudi Arabia-based medical doctor, Hassan Alkahallaf of the sum of $10,000.

The suspect, Ekperebuike Akadonye from Imo State contacted his victim, via an email address igofnieria@outlook.com purportedly belonging to the IGP, claiming that President Muhammadu Buhari, in his fight against corruption, had directed the IGP to make a refund to victims who had been defrauded by Nigerians in the past.

Alkahallaf, attached to the Department of Urology, at the Security Forces Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, who had previously been duped by some Nigerian internet fraudsters, believed he was the real IGP of the Nigeria Police Force. The money, according to Akadonye, would be used to hire a lawyer to represent since he wasn't based in Nigeria.

The IGP swung into action immediately and directed his operatives at the IRT to trail and apprehend the fraudster. Akadonye was trailed to his hometown in Isiala-Mbano where he was arrested. The police also recovered a mobile telephone and laptop used in carrying out the fraud.

"I am a trader and I have my shops in Mbano, but I lost them when they were demolished by our governor and since then I had to look for what to do."

20-year-old Cephas Abbas from Benue State has been arrested by the police in Edo State for allegedly hacking a motorcyclist identified as Aniete Okon to death in the Ovia South-West Local Government Area of the state.

In a bid to steal the victim's motorcycle, the suspect, a rubber tapper had asked Okon to give him a ride to Benin City on November 3.

On their way, he told the deceased victim to make a stopover on the way near a rubber plantation. Abbas picked a cutlass and hacked Okon to death before fleeing on the motorcycle.

His attempt to sell the motorcycle failed after residents in the area, who suspected that he must have stolen the property alerted security operatives attached to an agro-allied firm. He was handed over to the police in the area.

In his confessional statement, Abbas said he never intended to kill the man and blamed his heinous crime on poverty.
"He took me on his motorcycle, and on our way from Benin, I saw a cutlass at a rubber plantation. Then I told him to stop, take the cutlass and cut him in the neck. I did not plan to kill him; it was because of poverty. I took the motorcycle to another community to sell. But I could not sell it; it was identified as a stolen motorcycle. The residents of the community said the motorcycle was stolen and that they would follow me to where I reside to verify the ownership of the motorcycle. As we were going, some security men stopped us and the residents explained to the security men that they suspected the motorcycle I was riding did not belong to me. So, I was taken to a police station. I regret what I have done."
The State Police Commissioner, Mr Halilu Gwandu, who paraded Abbas along with other suspects on Tuesday, November 29th, said the case was still under investigation.

All my life, I have been upright in my transactions but this is a huge mistake and I regret my action.”
Also arrested by NDLEA officials is a commercial tricyclist in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Cajetan Chinedu Egwin. He was arrested on arrival from Kigali, Rwanda with 3.900kg of heroin . When interrogated, Chinedu said he needed the money to fix his Tricycle as well as settle his Landlord.

I accepted the offer because nobody was willing to help me. Apart from the repairs, my rent is due and my landlord has been asking for his money,” he said.
Both men would soon be charged to court for drug trafficking.
