Update! Ireland deportee who killed father and left mom unconscious in Magodo appears in court

Babalola Rotimi Junior, 24, was today remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons for the alleged murder of his father and stabbing his mother into a state of unconsciousness.

Magistrate Bola Folarin-Williams of an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court gave the order when he appeared before her on a two-count of murder and attempted murder with knives.

The magistrate said the accused should be remanded pending the receipt of legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

Rotimi’s plea on the first count of murder was, however, not taken as the court lacked the jurisdiction to try such matters. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempted murder and was granted a bail of N500,000 with two responsible sureties both of whom must be blood relations.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Hafsat Ajibodu, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on Dec. 4 at about 11. 30 a.m., at No. 11, Ibitayo St., Magodo GRA, Phase 2 in Lagos State.

She alleged that the accused had stabbed his father, Babalola Rotimi, 59, to death with a kitchen knife.

The accused was also alleged to have stabbed his mother, Adijat Babalola, who is presently battling with her life in an undisclosed hospital with another knife.

He said, “My father wanted to use charms to make me rich, I don’t know why he would want to do that to me despite being a practising Muslim.

“My parents would lock me up and send thugs to beat me up, I stabbed them out of frustration and because he would not give me money for my upkeep.

“I went to shoprite to purchase two knives to defend myself and to gain my freedom because I was always locked up in my room.”

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 221 and 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, a deportee from Ireland, showed no sign of remorse and claimed his father deserved what he dished to him while in court.

Section 221 prescribes a death sentence for offenders.

The court adjourned the case till Jan. 23, 2017 pending the receipt of legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

An airline abruptly canceled its flights from JFK to Guyana in South America Saturday morning, leaving about 1,000 travelers stranded at the Queens airport.

Unfortunately, among those left stranded by Dynamic International Airways was Leezel Cambridge, a 27yrs old bride-to-be, who missed her own wedding.

It was all because of an unexplained snafu in the 2am flight.

Her husband had to tell their 300 guests, who were already waiting at their venue, that she wouldn’t be making it. “I had to cancel it,” she said of her nuptials.

She spent Sunday which was supposed to be her wedding day curled up on the airport’s floor with her wedding dress and some of her family members. How frustrating!

Here she was trying on her wedding dress before the unfortunate development at the airport.

Shocking! Customs intercept 102 Bags of plastic rice ...photo

The Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja, of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 102 bags of plastic rice branded “Beat Tomato Rice’’ with no date of manufacture.

The Customs Area Controller of F.O.U. Comptroller Mohammed Haruna, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos.
Before now, I thought it was a rumour that the plastic rice is all over the country but with this seizure, I have been totally convinced that such rice exists."

Surprisingly, the plastic rice was prepared for distribution to the public this Christmas season.

Haruna said that officers of the unit intercepted the plastic rice along Ikeja area on Monday, adding that a suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure.

“We have done the preliminary analysis on the plastic rice. After boiling, it was sticky and only God knows what would have happened if people consumed it.

“I advise those economic saboteurs who see Yuletide season as a peak period for nefarious acts to desist from such illegal business.

“The unit has decided other operational modalities that will give them a run for their monies and count their losses,” NAN quoted the controller as saying.

The controller, however, advised the media to educate the public on the existence of plastic rice, adding that it was no longer a rumour.

Court issues warrant for Oluwo’s arrest ...photo

A Magistrate Court, sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has issued a bench warrant against the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adewale Akanbi, following the monarch’s refusal to appear in court in a case instituted by the Oluwo of Iwo Oke, Oba Kadiri Adeoye.

The implication of the bench warrant, according to lawyers, is that the monarch should be arrested and brought before the court at its next adjourned sitting.

Although Oba Akanbi was represented in court on Tuesday by his counsel, Mr. Olaide Yekeen, Magistrate Olusola Aluko issued the bench warrant  despite the application for a stay of proceeding, notice of preliminary objection and a notice of appeal filed before the court.

Oba Akanbi, the paramount ruler of Iwoland, was dragged before the court by the Oluwo of Iwo Oke, for alleged criminal offences.

The magistrate had, at the last sitting of the court on December 2, threatened to issue a bench warrant on the monarch if he refused to appear in court on Tuesday (yesterday).

Counsel for Oba Akanbi had told the court that his client had several applications before the court, adding that the notice of preliminary objection, which bordered on competence and jurisdiction of the court, should be heard first before the substantive application.

He said Section 19 (1) of the Magistrate Court Laws highlighted the jurisdiction of the court, arguing that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.

“When there is an application challenging the jurisdiction of the court, such application should be taken first. We are vehemently and seriously challenging the competence and jurisdiction of this court and our applications should be taken first,” he said.

But counsel for the applicant, Soji Oyetayo, in his submission, told the court that the court made an order which the Oluwo had refused to comply with.

He stated that the applications, filed by the first respondent (the Oluwo) could not stop the order of the court that the monarch should appear before it.

“I urge the court to jettison the applications. They have to obey the earlier order of the court. The first respondent should be in court today but he is not in a flagrant disobedience of the court order,” he said.

The magistrate, in his ruling, agreed with the respondent (the Oluwo) on the issue of jurisdiction, but said the notice of appeal was not ripe.

He said, “The court mandated the first respondent to appear in court. He has violated the court order of the last adjourned date. I hereby issue a bench warrant against him.”

The counsel for Oluwo, while speaking with journalists on the court premises, said the applications for a stay of proceedings, notice of appeal and application on the jurisdiction of the court, ought to have been heard first before the magistrate issued the bench warrant.

Yekeen stated that the authorities he cited during the hearing should suffice, adding  that even in a case of contempt of court, the court should hear such objections first.

He argued that the order was made in error.

Yekeen added, “As it is, what we have is that we are following the due process of the law and we believe that the law should be and grow and it should be allowed to follow the due process.

“If a doctor makes a mistake, the mistake is buried six feet under the ground but if a lawyer or a judge makes a mistake, the mistake will be inherited by generations unborn.  That is what we have today.”

See Cleric who impregnates 16 yr old daughter and keeps her at home ...photo

A 16-year-old girl (names withheld) is allegedly carrying a seven-month-old pregnancy for her 56 years old father, Prophet Taiwo Oluboyode, in Odode, Idanre area of Ondo State.

Vanguard gathered that the suspect, who owns a white garment church and currently in police custody, allegedly informed his interrogators that he was tempted by the devil to commit the act.

However, people in the agrarian community, who spoke with Vanguard, are of the opinion that the cleric must have carried out the act “to renew his spiritual power.”

Findings in the town showed that the cleric is popular and his church, located at Oke-Ijebu Street, Odode, Idanre, always records high traffic of miracle-seeking worshippers from far and near on a regular basis.

Sources close to the church revealed that the prophet is a specialist in bathing women in streams to ward off evil spirits and those tormented by spiritual husbands, who prevent them from getting married or having babies.

Reports had it that the prophet lives alone with his daughter after the wife left him years back. It was learned that efforts by the estranged wife to take her daughter along with her were rebuffed by the suspect, who insisted he needed her around to run errands and take care of him in the interim.

A family source hinted that the suspect had refused to remarry after the wife left and had preferred sleeping with his daughter instead. It was unclear if the victim raised any alarm over her defilement by her father, but neighbours said that the girl was always keeping to herself.

Vanguard learned that the victim stopped going to school when signs that she is pregnant was becoming evident. Her school mates, who came to the house to ask after her, were informed by the father that she had travelled to Lagos to continue her studies.

It was gathered from police source that when the victim took in and informed the suspect, he allegedly gave her some concoctions to terminate the pregnancy. The attempt, it was learned, failed.

The suspect, according to a source, contemplated smuggling the victim out of the house to a private clinic, but she refused and threatened to raise alarm. The suspect then instructed the victim to stay indoors to avoid suspicion from church members and their neighbours.

It was revealed that one of the neighbours, who saw the girl with a protruding stomach, raised the alarm. Police laid ambush and arrested the suspect when he returned home.

Detectives informed Vanguard that the only words uttered by the suspect was “it was temptation and the work of the devil.” The church is presently under lock and key, ýwhile other leaders and members of the church have gone underground for fear of arrest. Police spokesperson, Femi Joseph, promised to get the details from the DPO in Idanre, but had not done so at press time. However, police detectives at Ala Police Station in Akure, confirmed that the cleric had been arrested and would soon be prosecuted.

33 year old commercial motorcycle rider, Segun Ogunlusi, pictured above, who was recently arrested for killing his 60 year old mother, Abimbola Ogunlusi, at their home in Ogijo area of Ogun State, today confessed to the crime, saying his mother's high demand for sex from him made him kill her and bury her corpse in a shallow grave.

Ogunlusi while confessing, said that after he hacked his mother to death, he poured kerosene on her remains but later buried her when the corpse failed to catch fire.
"My mother kept saying if I had sex with her I would be free.
