A 20-year-old woman, Chioma Fidelis, has confessed to how she parted with her two months old son, Favour Fidelis, in exchange for half a bag of rice, six chairs, cement and N200,000 cash.

Speaking to newsmen today when she and her accomplices were paraded by the police in Imo State, Chioma said she got pregnant out of wedlock, and that being unable to cater for the newborn, she opted to batter him for the aforementioned items.

Chioma, who hails from Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo State, said she had no option but to accept the offer, allegedly because the baby was suffering from kwashiorkor, and also because she had no husband to take care of her and the child.

Her female accomplice, one Chidimma Unakalamba, reportedly confessed to selling the baby boy to a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Anyanwu, who allegedly were in dire need of a male child.

She said the baby was sold for N600,000 to the couple. The baby has been recovered, though.

But a mild drama ensued when the couple insisted that they paid N700,000 for the child.

Unakalamba then admitted that she deducted N137,000 she spent on the child’s medical bills, and that she gave the mother N200,000 and pocketed the remaining.

Update! Notorious kidnapper, Evans' Lawyer Fined 20,000 For 'professional Misconduct'

Olukoya Ogungbeje, the lawyer representing billionaire kidnapper Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans was awarded a cost of N20,000 by Justice Abdulazeez Anka of a Lagos Division of the Federal High Court, Thursday 13th July 2017.

Ogungbeje was fined for professional misconduct as he failed to show up for the fundamental rights suit filed on behalf of Evans by him, over alleged illegal detention and instead sent Stephen Abunike, a litigation officer from his law firm, who told the court that his principal was indisposed and had written a letter seeking an adjournment.

Emmanuel Eze,  who represented Lagos State Commissioner of Police, opposed Ogungbeje?s application for adjournment. According to him, he wasn't informed about their plans, adding that another lawyer from Ogunbeje's firm could have easily come to represent Evans.

According to him, it is an ?affront? to the court for Ogungbeje not to send another lawyer to stand in for him.
?In view of this, we are of the view that the applicant?s counsel is most unserious with this application. We, therefore, ask for a punitive cost of N100,000 against the applicant and his counsel,? he said.
The judge however awarded a disciplinary cost of N20,000 against Mr. Ogungbeje which must be paid before July 20,  for what he described as unprofessional conduct. He said:
?Counsel wrote a letter seeking for an adjournment without copying the prosecution. This, to me, is unprofessional. The court hereby warns counsel to desist from such type of practice.?
The judge further warned Ogunbeje to desist from practices unbecoming of a legal practitioner.  He also said the facts before him showed that Evans was still in police custody.

Update! Kidnapper Evans’ Lawyer Absent From Court, Feigns illness Over Lawsuit Seeking N300m From Nigerian Police

Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, the counsel of detained notorious kidnapper Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a. Evans failed to appear for the hearing on the N300 million fundamental human rights lawsuit he initiated against the Nigerian Inspector General of Police (IGP) for “unlawful” detention of the kidnap kingpin.
The case, scheduled for today before Justice Abdulaziz Anka of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, could not proceed as Mr. Ogungbeje, was absent in court claiming he took ill.
Ogungbeje had written to the court, seeking an adjournment on the grounds of ill health.
But Justice Anka awarded a punitive cost of N20,000 against him for what he described as unprofessional conduct.
The judge noted that while Ogungbeje wrote to the court, seeking an adjournment on the grounds of ill health, he did not send a copy of the letter to the counsel to the police.
According to the judge, it is unprofessional for a lawyer to communicate with a judge without carrying the other parties along.
The judge warned Ogungbeje to desist from such conduct.

In a short ruling, Justice Anka held, "The court has noted the conduct of counsel, who wrote to the court without copying other parties. This is unprofessional. The court hereby warns the counsel to desist from such a conduct."
He awarded a punitive cost of N20,000 Ogungbeje, holding that the money must be paid before the next adjourned date, otherwise, the lawyer would not be given audience.
When the case was called, an Executive Litigation Officer from Ogungbeje's law firm, Mr. Stephen Abunike, who appeared in court, told the judge that his principal was indisposed and had written a letter seeking an adjournment.
Abunike added that he had attempted to give a copy of the letter to the counsel for the police, Mr. Emmanuel Eze, but the counsel declined service.
Responding, Eze, who said he only just sighted the letter in court, noted that the letter was signed by one Saheed Sanni, a lawyer in Ogungbeje's law firm, who said their principal took ill and other lawyers in the office were engaged.
Eze urged Justice Anka to reject Sanni's excuse and to consider it as an affront to the court, saying it showed that the law firm was not serious.
"My Lord, I think it's an affront to this court and in view of this, we are of the view that the applicant's counsel is most unserious with this application. I pray this court to award a punitive cost of N100,000 against the applicant and his counsel," Eze said.
However, rather than N100,000, Justice Anka awarded N20,000 against Ogungbeje and adjourned the case till July 20.
In his fundamental rights enforcement suit, Evans, through Ogungbeje, is seeking a court order directing the police to charge him to court immediately or release him on bail if they are not ready to charge him to court.
Ogungbeje argued that Evans' detention since June 10, 2017 without being charged to court was a violation of his client's fundamental rights enshrined in sections 35 (1) (c) (3) (4) (5) (a) (b) and 36 of the Constitution.
For his alleged unlawful detention without being charged to court, Evans wants the court to award N300m damages against the police in his favor.

Shop assistant dodges jail for stealing over €19,000 worth of Lotto tickets in Dublin

A Lotto-obsessed shop assistant has dodged jail for nicking more than €19,000 worth of Lotto tickets - while in a relationship with the newsagent’s son.
A court heard it was impossible to find out exactly how much Tara Egan had stolen from Doyle’s Topshop petrol station on Muckross Road in Killarney between 2011 and 2014.
The owner, Billy Doyle - whose son Egan was dating - had to close down as a result.
But she won’t spend a day behind bars for the brazen theft, despite not being able to pay back the cash.
Sample charges were brought after a painstaking Garda investigation outlined by Detective Garda Bill Stack.
Mum-of-three Ms Egan, 28, of Arbutus Grove, Killarney, admitted to 17 sample counts of theft in that she stole National Lottery Lotto 5-4-3-2-1 tickets from owner Billy Doyle.
It was “impossible to quantify” how often Ms Egan had played the Lotto on the shop’s machine, and it was also impossible to quantify how much she had won, Detective Gda Stack said.
The sales value of the used tickets found by her former partner when he was clearing out her bedroom, amounted to €19,492, while only €800 of winnings could be determined.
Mr Doyle said he had to close his shop, he was suffering health problems and the matter was further complicated in that Egan had been in a serious relationship with Peter Doyle, the owner’s son, the Circuit Criminal Court in Tralee was told.
Billy Doyle who owned a petrol station in Killarney
Only when the relationship broke up and Peter was cleaning out the couple’s house, were the piles of used Lotto tickets with a value of just under €20,000 discovered.
Egan began working in the shop in 2007 and remained there for seven years.
A relationship developed between herself and Peter Doyle.
In 2014, difficulties arose and she was on sick leave she ceased employment in September 2014.
“In the course of vacating their accommodation, Peter Doyle discovered a considerable amount of used Lotto tickets spanning the period 2011 to 2014,” Judge Thomas E O’Donnell said.
She had been taking the tickets and not paying for them and attempts to quantify the exact amount had not been possible but “the conservative estimate” was in excess of €19,000.
Billy Doyle told the court in a victim impact statement he had to close his shop in 2015 and his health was affected, more so as Tara Egan was a trusted employee and considered one of the family.
Egan was now unemployed, as was her husband, and there was no realistic prospect of compensation, the judge said.
Her barrister, Katie O’Connell, said her client was deeply remorseful and her gambling addiction issue had been addressed. She accepted her responsibility and apologised to Mr Doyle.
A probation report by Nora Brassil found Egan carried a low risk of re-offending.
The appropriate jail term was two years and five months, Judge O’Donnell said.
He said he was prepared to suspend the sentence for a period of two years and five months.

Conor McGregor fuels racism row as he faces off with Mayweather in New York

The Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor world media tour stormed into New York in the early hours of this morning with the fighters unleashing more profanity-laced attacks on each other as they looked to build up interest in their light middleweight boxing bout.
On the third stop of four-day, four-city barnstorming blitz to promote their Aug. 26 Las Vegas clash, the witty barbs that characterised their exchanges Los Angeles and Toronto were replaced by what appeared to be real venom.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) champion McGregor traded in the stylish suits he wore on the previous two legs of the tour for psychedelic pants and a furry white coat worn over a bare, tattooed chest.
He strutted imperiously onto the Barclays Center stage to an Irish ballad and thunderous applause before flexing his muscles, striking poses and rattling off a dance step or two as he waited for the undefeated boxer.

It looked for a moment as if the circus was going to take a turn for the worse when McGregor, who addressed the 40-year-old Mayweather as "boy" in Toronto, let a howling crowd know he did not take the charges of racism seriously.
"A lot of media have said I am against black people, that's absolutely ... ridiculous," McGregor roared.
"All of the media seem to be saying I'm against black people... Do they not know I'm half black? I'm half black from the belly button down."
The Irishman, who at times during the earlier stops had appeared to get under Mayweather's skin, had no such luck in Brooklyn, where the American ignored the jibes and took selfies while McGregor barked in his ear.
McGregor is expected to be the aggressor in the ring against the former five-division world champion to make up for his lack of boxing experience and has played that role throughout the tour, which wraps up on Friday with a stop in London.
Famous for his knockout power in the MMA cage, McGregor managed only glancing blows on Thursday as Mayweather, widely regarded as one of the best defensive fighters of all-time, side-stepped and returned fired by dubbing McGregor a quitter.

"(He) didn't quit once, (he) didn't quit twice, (he) quit three time," Mayweather screamed with another volley of profanity, referring to McGregor tapping out in his three career defeats.
While boxing purists have denounced the fight as nothing more than a laughable cashgrab it has nonetheless captured the fascination of many fight fans.
McGregor has been the undisputed favourite at each stop on the media tour, and can expect more of the same in London, but few give him any chance in the ring against one of the most skilled and tactically astute boxers of all time.
The fight would seem an outlandish mismatch with Mayweather 49-0 stepping into the ring against McGregor, who will be making his professional boxing debut.
The underdog role is one that fits McGregor like one of his tailored suits, however, and he recalled similar predictions before he beat Jose Aldo to win the UFC featherweight title in late 2015.
"They said the same things then as they're saying now," he said.
"They said I had no chance. They said I’m in over my head. They said he kicks too hard. Too many weapons.
"The Irishman is going to fall short, he doesn’t stand a hope.
"It took me 13 seconds."

Two men on a moped carried out five acids attacks during a spree across London which lasted less than 90 minutes, police said.
The Metropolitan Police said one victim had been left with "life-changing" injuries after being doused on Thursday night in the east of the capital.

The assaults appeared to be linked and two involved victims having their mopeds stolen, they added.
A male teenager was later said to have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and robbery and has been taken to an east London police station.
At the start of the rampage, a 32-year-old moped driver had been approached by the pair as he drove towards the Hackney Road junction with Queensbridge Road.
The two male suspects had tossed the noxious substance into his face before one of them jumped on to his vehicle and drove away.
Police said the man had gone to an east London hospital and they were awaiting an update on his injuries.
Little more than 20 minutes later, at around 10.50pm, another victim had been sprayed with searing liquid by the pair on the Upper Street junction with Highbury Corner, Islington.
The victim was taken to hospital in north London.
Then at around 11.05pm, the fast-moving attackers swooped on a man in Shoreditch High Street, tossing the substance in his face.
His injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Within 15 minutes, they appeared to have struck again, launching their corrosive load at a man on Cazenove Road and causing "life-changing" facial injuries.
The final assault of the night was reported to police at 11.37pm, when another man was confronted as he sat on his moped in traffic on Chatsworth Road.
After again spraying the liquid in a victim's face, the moped was stolen and both attackers fled.
The Met Police said in a statement: "Inquiries are ongoing and officers from Hackney CID are investigating.
"Any witnesses, anyone with information or in possession of footage of these incidents should contact police on 101 or tweet @MetCC. To remain anonymous you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
The string of assaults comes just days after a man appeared in court accused of throwing acid at an aspiring model and her cousin.
Resham Khan, 21, and Jameel Muhktar, 37, were left with life-changing injuries after the attack on Ms Khan's 21st birthday in Beckton, east London.
John Tomlin appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent.
A mass acid attack has also previously hit the capital this year.
On Easter Monday, acid was sprayed at a crowded east London club night, leaving two revellers partially blinded and others disfigured.
Arthur Collins, the former boyfriend of reality TV star Ferne McCann, was charged in connection with the attack.
