Fleeing cultists forced guns on me, says suspect

This is what happens when you die, according to a bunch of different people who died

A 22-year-old armed robbery suspect, Abdulrafeez Abdulraham, on Sunday said he was going to watch football match at Araromi Village in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, when he was arrested by the Anti-Vice operatives of the Kwara State Police Command.
Though he denied being an armed robber, he admitted that he was arrested in possession of arms when he was nabbed.
He claimed that as he was going to watch the football competition, he ran into some gang members who were armed, adding that on sighting security operatives, they forced him to take the guns from them.
Abdulraham said, “I was going to the field to watch a football match on March 3. Some members of a gang, who were at my back, saw soldiers coming and they ordered me to take the guns from them; that if I did not take the arms, they would kill me.
“I was afraid and I collected the guns from them. Suddenly, the soldiers said we should stop and I threw away the guns, but they arrested me.”
Another suspect, Samuel Yahaya, 20, said he was framed by a person he identified simply as Raymond.
Yahaya, who is suspected to be a member of the Eiye Confraternity, said following a tip-off allegedly from Raymond, policemen arrested him.
Yahaya said, “I am here because someone framed me. His name is Raymond. He told a policeman that I had a gun.The police officer came to my house and arrested me. The police did not catch me with any gun.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sam Okaula, who also paraded three other suspected cultists – Joseph Ordue, Yusuf Olaitan and Isaah Ajanni – said the police recovered two cut-to-size double-barrelled gun from the suspected cultists.
He stated that acting on intelligence report, the Anti-Vice operatives stormed the rendezvous of the suspected cultists in the Oyun area of Ilorin while they were preparing to go out for an operation.
He said the suspects had confessed to being members of the Eiye Confraternity.
The CP warned people of “questionable characters” in Kwara to change their behaviour or relocate from the state, adding that the command was poised to apprehending and prosecuting them.
He also called on members of the public to collaborate with the police and offer useful information to security agencies.
Okaula said, “They are notorious members of Eiye Confranternity. They have confessed to being cultists. With these weapons, you can imagine the atrocities they had committed.
“I can assure the public that this war is ongoing and we need information, cooperation and collaboration to ensure peace in Kwara State.”

Police arrest LASU worker for lover’s death

An official of the Lagos State University, Samuel Ambe, has been arrested by the police for allegedly killing his lover, Mata Jidonu.
Thirty-two-year-old Mata was married to a lawyer, Sunday Jidonu, for whom she had three children.
It was learnt that the suspect worked at the Department of Works and Physical Planning of the university.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Mata, who lived in the Agric area of Ikogazebba, Badagry, had left home around 3pm on February 15, saying she was going to buy foodstuffs in the market, but reportedly headed for the lover’s house, a few kilometres away.
Her husband, Sunday, who had returned from the court earlier that day as a result of illness, became apprehensive when she did not return on time.
He said, “I came back from the court that day around 2pm because I was ill. On getting home, I found out that my wife was dressed up, ready to go out. I told her to prepare coffee for me because that it is what I normally take in the afternoon. She said I had been taking too much coffee and advised me to eat eba that was already prepared.
“She put the stew on fire while she went to pick our last child, Laura, from the school. I told her to help me buy drugs along the road. The same motorcyclist that took her to and from the school waited for her outside and took her again supposedly to the market to buy beans.
“I slept after taking the drugs. Laura woke me up around 5pm and I asked his brother where their mother was. I called her number but it did not go through. I called her mother, our church and the centre, where she was doing a post-literacy study; they all said she was not with them.”
Sunday said he became more worried when it was 9pm and Mata did not come home. He added that he could not sleep conveniently till the following day when he reported at the Badagry Police Division.
“I was at the station, when the head of the vigilante group in our community called me on the telephone that my wife had been found dead in a bush path. When I got to the scene, a crowd had gathered and policemen from Ado-Odo Ota, Ogun State, had arrived to pick her corpse. She was strangled and stabbed in the leg. Her private parts’ hairs had been shaved off,” he added.
The lawyer told our correspondent that the nature of Mata’s death prompted him to talk to people living around the area, saying that he was told she used to go to the suspect’s home regularly and was there on February 15.
He said he gave the information to the police, leading to Ambe’s arrest.
He said, “I was told that my wife had been sighted with Ambe on several occasions at his second house and that she entered the building on the day the incident happened. He is a non-teaching staff member at LASU. His family members do not live with him in that house. I reported to the police and eight days later, he was arrested.
“As we were going to the station in a police van, he called somebody on the telephone, telling the person in Egun language that the fat woman had been traced to his house. He did not know that I understand the language.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that Ambe’s phones were consequently seized and upon dialing the deceased’s number on one of the phones, it showed ‘D@M’ as the identity of the caller.
“The call logs we got from the MTN office revealed that he had been calling my wife every day since February 1. It was discovered that he had called her twice on February 15, the day she did not come back home,” he added.
It was learnt that the police recovered some charms from the suspect’s house, while bloodstains were found on the wall of the building
Sunday said, “He (Ambe) begged me to forgive him. He said he was not the one who killed my wife and that he was only dating her.
“But there are enough indications for me to believe that he is behind the death of my wife. Since then, some elders in the community have been threatening me to let go of the matter. I have also been noticing strange movements around my house.”
Confirming the incident via a text message, the Ogun State Police spokesperson, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the command had enough evidence to prosecute the suspect, adding that he would be charged to court.
He said, “The suspect is with us. We have credible evidence to prosecute the suspect and he will soon appear in court.”
The Acting Head, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations of LASU, Mr. Adekoya Martin, said the institution had not been officially informed about the incident.
He said, “I have contacted the chief security officer that was supposed to brief the management about the case, and he said the incident had not been officially reported. I will get back to you as soon as we are officially informed.”

Suspects snatch bag containing fufu, stew

The Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command says it has arrested three suspected teenage robbers for snatching a handbag containing wraps of fufu and beef stew.
The RRS said the suspects specialised in snatching valuables, using motorcycles, aka okada-snatch-and-run.
It was gathered that the suspects – Daniel Dali, 19; Emmanuel Ashaolu, 17; and Bright Ikenna Bright, 17 – were arrested on Friday at 10.48pm in the Ajegunle area by a team of RRS men on patrol.
Dali, an okada rider from Cotonu, and Ashaolu were said to have snatched a handbag from a yet-to-be identified lady.
However, unknown to them, the bag contained two wraps of fufu and stew.
It was learnt that their victim shouted for help, which prompted the RRS team to pursue the duo, leading to the arrest of Ashaolu, while Dali escaped.
The RRS commander, Tunji Disu, said the RRS team mobilised a decoy team, who combed the area, leading to the arrest of Dali, the okada rider, and Ikenna.
He said, “At the suspects’ apartment, two other roommates were arrested, but were later released after cross-examination by RRS officials.”
However, Dali said he started the business of okada-snatch-and-run in April 2015.
He said, “My mother’s death forced me into robbery. My mother gave me everything I wanted. After her death, I had no helper.
“Bright and I have been to four operations. In one of our outings, we snatched a recharge card worth N35,000. He sold it and gave me only N5,000. We don’t use guns; we have never operated with guns. We snatch valuables and escape on an okada.
“We have our routes. They are Boundary, Mile 2, New Roundabout, Wilma and Ajegunle. The okada we use was bought for me by a lady. I pay her in instalment. I have paid N75,000 out of N300,000.”
Ikenna said he had operated with the gang seven times.
He said, “Several boys do this business in Ajegunle. I know of a team, which live in different hotels, sleep in day time and operate at night. This is the only job they do to survive.”
The state police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, said the suspects had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.
She said the suspects had given information that would lead to the arrest of more members of the gang.

UK returnee, brother crushed in Lagos accident

Family suspects foul play in Ocholi, wife, son’s death
A United Kingdom returnee and his younger brother were the victims of an accident on the Otedola Bridge, Toll gate area of Lagos State.
While the UK returnee, whose identity had not been ascertained, was seriously injured; his brother, Oluwole Giwa, 35, who had come to welcome him home, died.
The accident occurred after a 40-foot trailer lost its brake on the Otedola Bridge area. It was learnt that no fewer than 10 vehicles were affected by the accident, with attendant gridlock.
The vehicles were said to be in a long queue waiting for their turns to buy fuel at a filling station when the trailer rammed into them.
It was gathered that the dead victim was driving his brother from the airport in a Toyota Hilux with number plate, FST 356 XS, when they were caught in the tragedy.
While the younger died on the spot, the UK returnee was said to have sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital.
An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said, “The accident happened in the early hours of Saturday. The trailer, with number plate, FKJ 519 CF, was heading towards Berger. Its brake suddenly failed.
“It tried to hit the median, but it could not hold the truck, so it rammed into a queue of motorists waiting to buy fuel at a filling station.
“It hit 10 vehicles in the queue. But the victims, who were in a blue Toyota Hilux truck, were badly crushed. The driver died on the spot, while the passenger, who happened to be the driver’s brother, escaped with injuries.”
An official of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said the deceased had to be extricated with a saw, adding that the vehicle was mangled.
He said, “The two people affected were siblings. The elder brother was coming from the UK, so the younger brother went to pick him from the airport.
“They were heading home when the accident happened. The driver was speeding when the trailer’s brake failed and it rammed into vehicles.
“The victims were badly affected because they were the ones directly in front of the truck. We had to use a saw to cut the vehicle in order to bring out the man that died.”
The survivor was reportedly treated by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service at the scene before being transferred to a hospital, while the corpse of the deceased was taken away by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps.
LASTMA officials later towed away the vehicles to ensure free flow of traffic.
The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr. Michael Akindele, who confirmed the incident, advised motorists to be cautious and adhere to safety precautions while driving.
The spokesperson for LASTMA, Mahmud Hassan, said, “Trailer drivers and indeed all motorists and commercial drivers, should always check the condition of their vehicles before putting them on the road to avert avoidable loss of lives.”

Presidency denies cancelling Osinbajo Indian trip because of Saraki

The Presidency on Sunday denied the cancellation of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s planned trip to India for fear that the embattled President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, may become acting President.
An online news medium, Sahara Reporters, had reported that Osinbajo’s planned trip was cancelled when it was discovered that President Muhammadu Buhari would also be out of the country at the time.
The report had insinuated that the Vice-President’s trip was called off in order to ensure that Saraki, who is the third in hierarchy in the country, did not emerge acting President in the absence of Buhari and Osinbajo.
A source in the Presidency, said, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that it was an unwritten rule that the President and Vice President could not be outside the country at the same time.
The source said it was wrong to think that cancelling Osinbajo’s trip had anything to do with Saraki, adding that the unwritten rule preceded the present administration.
Besides, he said if he had embarked on the trip, the Vice-President would have returned to Nigeria latest by Wednesday, stating that Buhari, who is travelling to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, is scheduled to return on Tuesday.
“If the President is travelling on Monday and will return on Tuesday, how many hours are you expecting Saraki to begin to wield the powers of a President?” he said.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, told journalists that there was no truth in the report that the Indian trip was cancelled.
Akande said, “Nigeria has been invited to the Indian/African Summit and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment will be leading a delegation to the event.
“There is nothing like cancellation. Remember that the visit of the Vice-President to any country is not treated in secrecy.
“Whenever the Vice-President is to travel out of the country, we inform Nigerians. So, this story in question is a bunch of speculation. There is no cancellation.”

Fayose suspends 16 teachers for child labour

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has suspended 16 teachers at Elo High School, Ayetoro Ekiti, for allegedly using their pupils as labourers on their farms during school hours.
He has also ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.
Fayose gave the directive in Ado Ekiti while receiving the report of a team led by the Deputy Governor, Dr Kolapo Olusola, that went to the school for a preliminary investigation.
According to a statement on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, the governor took the action following complaints from parents that their children were being made by some of their teachers to work on their farms during school hours.
The statement read partly, “Some of the affected students, who were brought to the Government House, Ado Ekiti, said under the guise of doing practical agriculture, their teachers took them to their private farms at least twice a week during official hours to work for at least 30 minutes.
“One of them, Oluyeye Femi, a JSS 3 pupil, said though the school has a farm where pupils are expected to work once a week, some teachers capitalise on that to take them to their private farms to weed and make heaps.
“A member of the National Youth Service Corps posted to the school, Miss Giredana Enogha, said when she got to the school last June, the situation was like a farm settlement. She added that the pupils were not encouraged to do any other thing than to go to farm all day.”
The governor, who was angered by the report, ordered at least 80 per cent of the teachers be transferred from the school.
He said, “This is sheer slavery. The teachers mentioned must be suspended immediately. The principal, who just got there two months ago, is exempted.
“But the former principal, who has been posted to somewhere in Ilasa Ekiti, must be investigated as well. Those that have taught in the school since 2012 must be investigated.
“Any teacher who uses pupils as farm workers will have himself to blame. That is slavery and I will tackle it. Pupils are taken to farms under the guise of doing agricultural practical. Those indicted will not go unpunished. This is not nice and it is uncalled for.”
