Lagos – A Nollywood actor and Special Adviser to the Kogi Governor on Arts and Tourism, Femi Adebayo, said on Monday that the empowerment of the youth was his goal in office. Adebayo in Lagos said that “we will create an enabling environment for the youths to thrive in whatever they want to do”. He said that lack of empowerment for the youth was why “we are experiencing a lot of vices in the country, as well as the absence of love for one another. “I will also promote arts and culture in my state, in line with whatever we plan to do for the youth. “The youths need a lot of mentoring and re-orientation plus empowerment, for them to be able to stand on their own,” he said. The special adviser on arts and tourism stressed that his office would be developed in such a way that it will help to generate enough Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for Kogi State and its people. He, however, said that actors going into government are also just on another call to service. “It is a matter of serving and serving well, representing the people and doing the needful, to strive to better the lot of their people and make a mark. “As an artist, one is required do what is expected by helping and contributing meaningfully to the growth and development of the state. “There is nothing wrong if you want to serve your people, regardless of who you are and It will make us campaign more about the arts, culture and tourism,” he said. Adebayo, 43, is an actor, film producer and a director. He hails from Ilorin, Kwara State but was born and raised in Lagos State. Adebayo graduated from the University of Ilorin with a Law degree and also studied Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan. He is the son of Adebayo Salami, a veteran actor, popularly known as “Oga Bello”. Adebayo has acted in Ayitale (2013), Apaadi (2009), Omo Pupa (2008), Ladies Gang (2011), Atona (2009) and many others. He was once nominated for the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor, in a supporting role. Adebayo has won other awards.
I won’t kill naira – President Buhari “Our recommendation is, and we will have discussions about it … that they should look at the exchange rate and try to make the exchange rate more realistic to what the value of the naira is to the dollar.” Thomas-Greenfield said the black currency market in Nigeria was “alive and well,” saying that inflexible naira rate can destroy President Buhari’s plans to expand economic growth and anti-corruption crusade. “Capital controls that limit access to foreign exchange rewards insiders and undermines the stated goals of Nigeria to increase domestic production because both Nigerian and expat investors alike tell us many businesses are unable to obtain the capital to purchase badly needed intermediate goods,” she added. The naira black market rate is currently some 40 % below the official. The CBN last year pegged the exchange rate to control speculative demand for the dollar.
How CBN plans to strengthen naira Thomas-Greenfield spoke ahead of talks in Washington on March 31 involving officials from the State Department, Pentagon and Treasury and their counterparts in the Nigerian government. President Buhari has several times restated that Nigeria won’t kill naira through devaluation. The president said that letting the currency fall would only result in higher inflation and cause hardship for poor- and middle-class Nigerians.

A hijacker who diverted an EgyptAir flight to Cyprus on Tuesday has released everyone on board except four foreign passengers and the crew, the airline said on Twitter. The company had earlier tweeted that five foreigners and the crew remained on board, after negotiations with the hijacker who commandeered the domestic flight to Larnaca airport. The identities of the foreigners was not immediately clear. Cyprus police said the hijacker had contacted the control tower at 8:30 am (0530 GMT) and the plane was given permission to land at 8:50 am. A crisis team was deployed to the airport, the main entry point for tourists to the Mediterranean resort island, reports AFP. The plane was parked on the tarmac away from the new terminal building but just 200 metres (yards) from a beach where dozens of foreign tourists were out. The aircraft was cordoned off by armed police. The airport was closed during the crisis with incoming flights diverted to Paphos on the island’s western edge. The hijacker made no immediate demands, Cypriot state television reported. The EgyptAir plane was headed from the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria to Cairo with 81 passengers on board when it was seized, Egyptian civil aviation said. The airline tweeted: “Our Flight MS181 is officially hijacked.” The Cyprus foreign ministry confirmed in a statement that the flight “was hijacked and diverted to Larnaca international airport”. It said “crisis management plans” had been put in place and that the country’s National Crisis Centre had been in contact with Egyptian authorities. Cyprus government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said on Twitter that President Nicos Anastasiades had spoken by telephone with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The motive of the hijacking was not clear. The incident came after a Russian airliner was downed on October 31 over the Sinai Peninsula, killing all 224 people on board. The Islamic State group claimed to have smuggled a bomb on board the plane. Larnaca is no stranger to hostage crises. Several hijacked planes were diverted to the airport in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1988, a Kuwait Airways flight hijacked en route from Bangkok to Kuwait was diverted to Mashhad and later to Larnaca, where hijackers killed two Kuwaiti passengers and dumped their bodies on the tarmac. In February 1978, an Egyptian commando unit stormed a hijacked Cyprus Airways DC-8 at Larnaca airport, where 15 passengers were being held hostage. Some 15 Egyptian soldiers were killed and 15 wounded. All the hostages were freed and the hijackers arrested.
Lagos – “My wife has turned my boxers to rags as she always tears them to rape me,” a retired soldier, Gafaru Rodoye, told an Igando Customary court in Lagos. He told the court on Tuesday that his wife, Idiat, with whom he had five children in their 20-year old marriage, always raped him. “My wife always rape me; she had turned all my boxers to rags to achieve her selfish aim,” he said. The petitioner said that his wife was in the habit of threatening his life through beating and that he was afraid she might kill him one day. “I had to run away from my 16-flat building to rent an apartment elsewhere just to avoid her frequent beatings, but she trailed me to my new apartment to fight me. “I have reported her severally to different police stations, but it did not yield any positive result,” he said. Gafaru said that his wife poured hot water on the new wife that was brought for him from the village by his family. He begged the court to end their 20-year old marriage, saying he was no longer in love as his life was in danger. “Please, separate us before my wife kills me, my life is not safe with her, I am a pensioner, I need to enjoy the fruit of my labour.” he said. However, Mrs Idiat Rodoye, 44, business woman, denied all the allegations, saying her husband was a womaniser. “My husband runs after anything in skirt; he always sends me packing from the house whenever he wants to bring in another woman. “He once sent me out with the children for three years. “After sending me out, he had married six different women, but none stayed long with him. He will always come back to beg me to pack back,’’ she said. The mother of five said she never raped her husband, that it was normal for husband and wife to make love. The respondent said that she did not beat her husband, but it was her husband that was always beating her. Idiat said that her husband removed the plasma television, air conditioner and disconnected the electricity supply from her flat, leaving her and the children in darkness. She urged the court to grant her husband’s wish that she too was tired of the marriage and no longer in love. The Court President, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, adjourned the case to April 5 for further hearing. 10 0 1 0
