A South Carolina woman who blinded herself after smoking weed laced with various dangerous chemicals, is finally home after undergoing medical attention at the hospital for weeks.
The woman identified as Kaylee Muthart ripped out her own eyes with her hands while in a meth-induced psychotic state last month outside of a church in Anderson, South Carolina, on February 6.The 20-year-old fought off help from locals while in a state of delirium, and it eventually took a team of deputies to restrain Muthart long enough to transport her to the trauma unit at nearby Greenville Memorial Hospital, where doctors broke the news to Muthart’s mother, Katy Tompkins, that her daughter was completely blind.
Kaylee Muthart said she was a straight-A student before she started doing drugs. She opened up that she smoked weeds and drank so much when she was attaining her late teen years.
But after dropping out of school, the 20-year-old was given a joint laced with methamphetamine and it made her feel ‘closer to God’, she said.
After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and having a mental breakdown, Kaylee said she sought out the high she first experienced last summer again and again.
According to her:
“I remember thinking that someone had to sacrifice something important to right the world, and that person was me. I thought everything would end abruptly and everyone would die if I didn’t tear out my eyes immediately.”“I pushed my thumb, pointer, and middle finger into each eye. I gripped each eyeball, twisted, and pulled until each eye popped out of the socket — it felt like a massive struggle, the hardest thing I ever had to do” She added
After an extended stay at the hospital and a psychiatric facility, Muthart returned to her mother’s home on March 1, and started her new chapter without sight — but with a new state of mind.
