Nigerian lawmaker based in the United Kingdom, Fiona Onasanya today vowed to fight to stay in Parliament in her first video since being released from jail.The former Labour member broke cover as a recall petition opens in Peterborough giving voters the chance to oust her.The 35-year-old spent a month behind bars and is thought to be wearing an electronic tag after she was jailed for lying to avoid a speeding charge.
But today Ms Onasanya – who is appealing her conviction – said
“I have not perverted the course of justice”.
In a YouTube video which appears to be filmed inexplicably in front of a green screen backdrop of New York, she said:
“What would you do if you knew you were innocent? “Would you sit back and accept it?”
“I am telling you I am innocent, and will continue to pursue avenues to clear my name.“If you wish for me to continue as your independent MP, I am willing and able to do so, but the choice is now in your hands.”
The Peterborough MP, who ousted Tory Stewart Jackson in 2017 on a majority of just 607, was jailed and expelled from the Labour Party after being convicted of perverting the course of justice.
A rare recall petition – only the second ever of its kind – will open at 7am tomorrow giving voters a chance to boot her out.
