UBTH Retiree In Police Net Over N6m Alleged Employment Scam

Officers of the Edo State police command have arrested one Mr Michael Oshodin, 59, over employment scam involving University of Benin (UNIBEN).
Mr Oshodin who is a retiree of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), allegedly duped over 25 persons by collecting huge sums amounting to over Six million naira from them with a promise of helping them to secure jobs in the University.
According to the suspect who is now in custody of the police at the command headquarters in Benin city, he retired from stores and supply unit of UBTH.
The suspect was paraded alongside others by the Edo State Commissioner of Police, DanMallam Mohammed, in Benin City, the state capital, for criminal offences.
“I did not collect the money alone, I was contacted by a staff of UNIBEN identified as Christy Oni, in the Department of Theatre Arts to look for persons seeking employment in the institution, which I did. I cannot actually say the exact amount collected from the applicants but I know it’s in millions of naira.
“She contacted me for the job, I gave the deceased UNIBEN staff (Christy) N1.2 million. I have already told them I will pay them back, but they should give me a little time.“The woman (Christy) died two months ago. That was why this problem came up. The people had been begging me to help them find job and I decided to help them when the opportunity came.
“I was caught inside UNIBEN when one of the victims saw me and raised the alarm.
Meanwhile, the commissioner of police, Edo State, Danmallam Mohammed has warned the general public, especially job seekers to be careful of who they transact business with.
