Expressing joy and appreciation on his 85th birthday, the pioneer chairman, Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Justice Mustapha Akanbi, has said that he undergone 14 Chemotherapy and one major surgery in the last two years.Speaking at a public lecture organised by Mustapha Akanbi Foundation in Ilorin on Monday, Justice Akanbi, a former President of the Court of Appeal, said that he was a patient at London, Abuja and Ilorin hospitals respectively in the last two years, where he said he had undergone various treatment before God spared his life to celebrate his 85th birthday.
Justice Akanbi, who thanked God for sparing his life to mark his 85th birthday, said that he did not believe he could survive the trials, tribulations and ordeals in the last two years.
“I feel highly humbled as I stand to address you today on this 85th anniversary of my birthday. For little had I expect to survive the trials, the tribulations and the ordeals I went through in the last two years in various hospitals in London, and later in Abuja and Ilorin.
“I had altogether 14 chemotherapy and a major surgery at Harley Street Hospital and St Mark’s Hospital. I was also at the Princess Grace Hospital, the Lewishiam Hospital and other hospitals and a few other hospitals in Nigeria.
“All told, I thank my Creator, the Almighty Allah (SWT), the Giver and Taker of life, the Lord of the Worlds, the Master of the day of judgments, the Bestower of all favours and preferment ad by whose grace ad holy will all things are done and made possible.
“I thank Him for His mercy, kindness and love; and for sparing my life to be part of today’s ceremony. May the Almighty continue to support and grant me good health in His service ad service to humanity in the years to come’’.
Akanbi, however, charged Nigerians to shun any act that could divide the country, adding that ethnicity, religious bigotry and corruption could not promote the oneness of the country.
In his lecture titled: ‘’Nation Building in Africa; The role of African Leaders’’, the General-Secretary, National Union of Textile and Garment Workers of Nigeria, NUCGTWN, Comrade Issa Aremu, challenged public office holders to account for how they have succeeded in their constitutional roles for which they were elected.
Aremu described Justice Akanbi as a father, mentor, pan-African leader and a role model worthy of celebration, urging the Nigerian Leader to emulate him.
He said the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, would organize a nationwide rally for a united Nigeria for good governance on October 1st.
“All Nigerian compatriots should rise, Nigeria call obey. We must condemn the fading national consciousness among our elected and appointed leaders. Furthermore, Nigerians should champion the cause of Africa unity and independence.
