21-years- old Joy and Fortune, 20, left Nigeria with hopes of a better life in Europe but ended up in a Libyan detention centre, where they were beaten and tortured by guards who demanded money from their families to secure their release.

According to Doctors Without Borders, after they regained their freedom, the girls managed to take a rubber boat from Libya.
The boat's fuel ran out a few hours into their journey and for two and a half days they drifted out into the open sea, without eating or drinking until a fisherman saw them and alerted the Tunisian coastguard, who brought them to Tunisia.
