UK's Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s brother quits government

UKHours after suffering a humiliating series of Brexit defeats in Parliament, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson suffered yet another shock as his younger brother, Jo Johnson dramatically resigned from government and parliament in what many interpreted as an apparent protest at his leadership.

Jo Johnson announced his resignation amid the controversy of whether and how the U.K. will be leaving the European Union.

"In recent weeks I’ve been torn between family loyalty and the national interest," Johnson, who was a minister in his brother Boris' Cabinet, said on Twitter.
"It’s an unresolvable tension and time for others to take on my roles as MP and minister."

Recall that the Boris Johnson's "do or die" insistence on taking the UK out of the European Union by October 31 sufered two significant setbacks on Wednesday September 4, as lawmakers passed a bill forcing him to request another extension and then blocked his attempt to call a snap election.

It was further learnt that Johnson family are all on different sides in the Brexit discussion. The Prime Minister's sister Rachel who has represented different parties is opposed to Brexit, and his father Stanley is said to be a committed europhile and former European Commission official.
