A former Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Wakili, says the ongoing travail of Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, should serve as a lesson to policemen.
Kyari, a super cop, was suspended from the force after the FBI indicted him over some alleged deals with suspected billionaire fraudster, Ramon Abbas, better known as Hushpuppi.
The FBI had issued a warrant for his arrest, asking the Federal Government to track him down.
In an interview with BBC, Wakili said police officers ought to know that every action they take has consequences.
He justified the Police Service Commission’s decision to suspend Kyari.
“This issue of Abba Kyari could be true and could also be a case of someone who’s after getting an opportunity to persecute him. Only Allah that knows the crux of the matter.”
“So, now it’s only the probe that could substantiate the fact or otherwise. And for other low-ranking police officers, this should serve as moral guide to them. There are two sides to every action we take – the one in this world and the hereafter.
“So in whatever situation one finds oneself, he/she should be just. It’s said that a just person always has the backing of Allah and He would never leave His servant to his own fate.”
Asked if Kyari may get fair hearing from the panel IGP Usman Alkali constituted to probe the allegations, Wakili said he’s optimistic that the committee will be fair.
He said: “There is going to be free and just hearing. There won’t be anything subtle; and whoever does well and right knows their deed.”
