Because no matter how bad it is to be unemployed, your best option is to "always make the most of it". Remember the saying "when life gives you a lemon, make lemonade".

Volunteering is a great way to fill a gap in your CV. Employers highly admire it as it shows that money isn't the only important thing to you; rather, you are passionate about what you do and care about helping others.
