What Nigeria’s senators and House of Reps members receive as salaries, allowances

The debate on the amount Nigerian lawmakers earn has always been a recurring one.
A sizable number of reports have been filed on the issue, each attributing varying figures as the amount the lawmakers take home annually. Nevertheless, the central argument over time has always been that the Nigerian lawmakers are one of the best paid in the world, even getting better pay than their pairs in the developed economies.
In 2015, Quartz Africa wrote that Nigerian lawmakers are "among the world's top" and substantiated its claim with data from The Economist. "Nigerian legislators, among the world’s top-paid, receive annual salaries of between $150,000 to $190,000 per annum depending on exchange rates. At current exchange rates, Nigerian lawmakers would earn around $160,000 more than British MPs who make around $105,000 according to data from The Economist.
"In fact, until plunging oil prices started putting pressure on the Nigerian naira earlier this year, the Nigerian lawmakers were the second-highest paid lawmakers in the world," Yomi Kazeem wrote for Quartz Africa.
In 2018, a former lawmaker, Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the eighth assembly, reopened the debate when he said that the salary of senators is 750,000 naira per month plus allowances of 13.5 million naira per month, for a total package of 14.25 million naira per month.
However, the new president of the Senate and chairman of the National Assembly, Ahmed Lawan, prior to his election, defended the alleged N13.5 million monthly allowance being paid to each of the 109 senators in the country.
Lawan said the major component of the amount is for oversight assignment allowances. He said there would be no reduction of the amount saying there is nothing like jumbo pay for senators since each of them goes home with about N1 million monthly and allowances for oversight functions. How much really do the Nigerian federal lawmakers really earn? Legit.ng investigates the monthly salaries and allowances of the Nigerian lawmakers.
